like, i really avoid listening to the "essential" albums of history because the amount of god-like hype they get set expectations that i cant even begin to fathom what they could possibly contain. then when i listen to them and it just sounds good or great but nothing beyond that then I just get super confused because i dont get where all the hype is flying from and it makes it kinda harder to get into it. i suppose thats the reason im liking surfs up more than this, less cult worship over that record.
i dont know.

I respect that. It's best to just like what you like and not worry about trying to love what everyone else tells you to love.
Surf's Up does rule though.

yeah, i usually dont sweat what people say about albums but the godlike worship for this album (especially from users here who I highly trust for whats good and whats not) does create an air of mystery over what amazingness it contains and it just ends up being "eh". This album sure is hella beautiful when it gets there, though.

you'll get there, buddy
This took a couple of weeks to grow on me honestly, mostly because Sloop John B is kinda meh until it finally clicks and even then, it's still the weakest song on the album

ill keep it in rotation i suppose. i usually eat up baroque/chamber pop stuff (aka 60% of my 5s) but this was just cute. i dunno.

I'd say the next time you feel real down, check this
I cannot say enough about how relatable a ton of the songs on here are.
Since you're digging Surf's Up, check out Sunflower, it's even better.

yeah that song rules. Got some crazy synthy, proto-shoegaze thing going on. I still like Surf's Up better overall though.

I like SU a ton when I first got to, but it's a bit patchy at the start that kinda slows it down.
Sunflower is far more consistent, although I could live without At My Window.
All I Wanna Do should be longer. I could listen to that...forever.
This one is from Carl and the Passions, which is a lot weaker than Sunflower and Surf's Up. But this song would've fit in a lot on Surf's Up instead

Thanks Fripper, "All This is That" is gorgeous. I'm in disbelief that a Wilson was not involved in the writing.
