Why did they never have another album in the same league as this one? I’m not fully up to speed on the band’s history, Brian Wilson’s mental issues, etc. but for real why does Pet Sounds pretty much stand alone in BB’s discography?

@butt because brian’s mental health rapidly declined right when he hit creative peak, check Smile Sessions though

i know theres an answer keeps this off the 5 forever for me since i hate its lyrics lol but otherwise yea as good as it gets. plus fortunately hang on to your ego exists and rules
you still believe in me and god only knows ofc are two of the best ever by anyone

I’ve said this before but I am very glad it’s not “hang on to your ego”
The weak point is “I just wasn’t made” for me

Hang On to Your Ego is so much better

Nah feels like a “just read Freud” thing to me. Weird for pop. Too esoteric. “I have to find it by myself” makes the contradiction in “answer” but somehow less bad than the willies I get from “hang on to your ego”

Him singing “I know there’s an answer” and the melody bursting into those high pitches hits way harder for me than “hang on to your ego” where I both “have to think about what it means” and never end up producing much anyways, and then the chorus has passed. Answer is a better fit

i dont really mind lyrics being too esoteric for this specific album tbh when it was specifically advertised as the most progressive pop album of its moment anyway
but my big thing is mostly
"Love refused to sing the first draft of lyrics, recalling that they had promoted the use of LSD. After voicing his objections, Wilson allowed him to revise the song's message to be about finding meaning within oneself and allowing others to live as they wish, despite having reservations against those who abuse LSD as a form of escapism."
as a traveller of about 20 ish trips i am def not gonna listen to the mike love narc version fucking ever lmao

I don’t have a thing against LSD, but once in a while an LSD thing in a song makes me wish they’d stop singing about it. But agree to disagree obv

tbh even outside of my own enjoyment of the substance, j smth about brian writing a song about one of his own profound experiences generally framed in a more sympathetic light to people whove gone through similar stuff being rewritten by mike to shit over people who do it is just lame to me lol. but ya in the eye of the beholder type beat

"weird for pop" sounds a lot like Love's bullshit "don't fuck with the formula" approach to music that ruined this band lol. just a weird way to approach this specific album which steadfastly refused to follow the rules
