Yeah, it’s the only song that really doesn’t fit. Everything else is either moody or downright sad, and then you’ve got this classic sea shanty tune out of nowhere 😂

I am once again reminding you all that Sloop John B is fantastic
genuinely had no idea people disliked that/Here Today until this goddamn thread

Sloop John B's always been my least favorite on here. Definitely don't understand the Here Today hate though
|
| |
Sloop is silly but the vocals arrangements are top tier
Here Today is godly all around
Album is like all masterpieces

There was a time when I didn't dig Sloop John B as much as the rest, but now I just see it making sense inside the album and what it possibly means, even if being a bit stylistic dissonant from the rest of the album.

"you still believe in me and god only knows gotta be up w the best songs ive heard by anyone" [2]
Why go to church for a religious experience when you can just stay home and listen to these songs

Here Today has such bitter MGTOW energy, also the 'feel so bad/heart feel sad/days go wrong/nights so long' section is objectively the worst lyric on this LP lmao

I Know There's An Answer isn't god-tier, but it wins best percussion and is maybe tied for best soundscape. The bass harmonica rising out of the shimmering waters of the piano melody like some majestic sea creature... gotta love it

"the 'feel so bad/heart feel sad/days go wrong/nights so long' section is objectively the worst lyric on this LP lmao"
it's... fine? not great but given the quality of most Beach Boys lyrics totally passable?
and, I cannot stress enough, passable is infinitely better than Mike Love's self-satisfied, confusing and dumb self-actualisation bullshit on I Know There's an Answer

Even though Brian Wilson wrote the lyrics?

to Answer? no, Tony Asher wrote the lyrics to Hang Onto Your Ego, the original version, and Mike Love rewrote them because he was too fucking square to sing about anything remotely related to drugs. which is why they're bad

The vocal melody of the chorus to “I know there’s an answer” lifts me to Such Great Heights
(Said it before will say it again, VERY glad it’s not “hang on to your ego”. Dodged a goddamn bullet, they did)

I would've been fine with either

Yeah ultimately I agree but hang on to your ego is way too esoteric/ironic/Freudian for me to do well with the melodic ebullience

ik “ego = Freud” is too superficial but u get me maybe

if only it was "hang on to your super-ego"
