i liked hybrid theory and a lot of the songs on it, but i also like this album, for how long it is. i like the length factor and getting the money worth for that but i think that the songs don't need to be 12 minutes long(except Wings Part 2).

Good review. You didnt comment on Right In Two through which I thought was quite a good song, aside from the fact that its alot like Pushit but thats my favoute tool song so I dont care.
Tool is my favourte band and the thing that excites me the most about this album is that they may actually come to australia again after many years, il be selling my soul to get a ticket if I have to.
Also your choice of the songs Vicarious, The Pot and 10000 days as being the best for the album is spot on.

Excellent critical review, with well justified points. I wasnt that impressed by Jambi either when I first heard it - they either should have made that opening riff heavier or less repetitive. However, I enjoyed it more after listening to it again. Personally, I quite like some of Maynard's weird screams and whines in Rosetta Stoned, it really adds to the paranoid atmosphere.

In a recent interview with MJK, the interviewer said that Rosetta Stoned sounds 'like Third Eye being covered by The Mars Volta'. I completely agree with all aspects of that

To Iluvatar: Why do you keep comparing albums to Hybrid Theory? You did the same thing on my Mudvayne review. Also, I wish people wouldn't say that thier songs are too long. Unlike some bands who just waste time and f**k around during long songs (Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss) Tool's song actually follow some logical and thought out progression instead of just a jam session. That is why the length of thier songs don't matter.

Great review, truly it was well written.
My one knitpick is that you dont seem to understand the overall concept behind "right in two". The lyrics and the overall sound given off by this song acts as an anchor to hold you down to listen to the album again. Maybe this was just for me.

In my opinion, Right in Two's lyrics are really lame. Instead of trying to connect thier lyrics with the real world, they just have them from the point of view of some angel. I don't think that's good songwriting at all.

Best. Review. Ever. I wish I had read this review before I decided to go out and buy it. If I'd known it was going to be so terrible, I would have borrowed it off a friend. Lateralus and Aenima were great though so I guess I can't smite Tool just yet. I agree with almost all of your points except for the one about Jambi. Oh its bad, I agree, but its tolerable, which is more than can be said for some of the other tracks.

Good review.
I still think that what you said warrants the album at least a 2.5 or 3 though.
I'd have to go higher myself though.
I think that Vicarious, The Pot and 10,000 Days are some of Tool's very best moments, as you've said, and I couldn't possibly call the album even only "Good" with that in mind.
I agree that Jambi, Wings part 1 and Rosetta Stoned could have been worked on more and have something missing (Or sound a little too much like older material) but they've still had me humming parts of them or singing them in the shower even if I feel they're quite distinctly average Tool songs.
Easily a 3.5+ for me. I think I have 4.5 at the moment but I was still buzzing from the albums best moments when I put that. I havn't decided what the actual rating is yet, possibly a 4.

I don't see how anyone thinks this review hasn't justified the rating it recieved, he hit it right on the spot. I've barely listened to pieces of this, but I can't stand Tool to begin with, so I agree with the review, only from what I've heard though. Awesome work, it was long, but incredibly easy to read.

Mmm. I wouldn't call APC mediocre either. Mer de Noms and Thirteenth Step were amazing albums.
|
| |
13th Step was reasonably good, albeit patchy. Mer De Noms is pretty much totally forgettable apart from a couple of songs, although I used to like it more. And eMotive was a genuinely horribly bad album. That's my take on it, anyway.

there was only one good song on that cd, and that was 'Passive'. even then it still isn't that good.
Mr. Nixon, i agree completely

Hmm. The only problem I had with this album, as all the other Tool albums, was its inconsistency. I hate how they can't make a completely solid album due to pointless filler tracks. They should have merged Lost Keys and Rosetta Stoned and completely scrapped Viginti Tres and Lipin Conjuring.
Anyway, good review. I still think this album is one of their best though.
