well if it comes from legitimate confusion i guess thats fine, but its probably better to search the artist's gender/pronouns than risk misgendering them. yeah, probably not that consequential on a music forum, but its a nice sign of respect to the artist especially when theyve said they feel negated by being misgendered.

He probably wasn't anticipating someone like you would show up to harp on him for being confused. He probably thought someone would quickly clarify and move on from the matter as it clearly wasn't offensive at all

matter couldve been moved on from if you and the other person didnt comment on it, but anyway. at least now people know how to non-offensively refer to the artist. sorry doofus if i came across preachy

I really am perplexed by the overwhelmingly positive reception of this album. This is armchair political nonsense. 'Obama' is pretty much the epicentre of this album's problems. America going to shit? Let's just blame the president, not his administration or other officials, nah, let's just spearhead him. It bothers me when artists try to be political, especially when they produce lyrics as ignorant as that song's

Brandon - I was being a tiny bit cheeky as is my wont but I'd like to think everyone could read between the lines and understand I respect the artist in question and the choices she's made

you know when i was 15 and had a long hair like those modern post-hxc vocalists ppl mistaken me for a girl but that's okay and i don't rly like feeling insecure or attacked. and its inconsequential cuz i don't know him personally so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Gyro I haven't digested the lyrics yet - they tend to seep in after a few listens for me and I've only spun this twice so far

obama truly is an uncomfortable song the lyrics make me cringe in a bad way but everything else is unsettling in a good way.

That's another thing about transgender folk: they probably don't like to be approached so cautiously, like you have to walk on eggshells around them when it comes to asking about their identity.

And yeah Obama is fine musically, a lot of the album is, which is no surprise since opn rarely disappoints, but I can't get past the lyrics. Especially on Obama. That song deflects from the real problems at play with his administration. It takes the easy, ignorant way out, rallying all the anti-Obama advocates for the wrong reasons

Just got finished your review. First paragraph is excellently stated. Everything you said was entirely worth saying and this is easily the best counterpoint I've read

One thing "addressing the actual problem; it's terrible delivery."

I think you meant "its". Minor nitpick

"see, i can't get on board with this at all. Anohni, for all her tribulations, is not a victim of america's extensive- and yes, horrific- drone bombing campaign. the fact that she's taken it upon herself to envision what it's like to be one of those people involves a certain degree of extrapolation which is naturely offensive, as it plays into ideas of postcolonial imperialism and the 'white savior' mentality."

real shit

I dunno, Talking Heads wrote a song from the point of view of an African terrorist (going a stage further by approximating the tone/inflection of the character's voice) and I didn't find it offensive on a fundamental level - I guess it all comes down to the execution

But to say that an artist using such references is being distasteful or insensitive I think ends up limiting creative options for no good reason

disagree with the white saviour point, it's not like she's silencing the voices of actual victims by creating the song and she's not raising any points the victims would disagree with (her only point basically being that drone bombing = bad). as for singing from the perspective of an actual victim, it could possibly be seen as offensive but it's an artistic decision intended to shock the listener, and it succeeds.

Intolerant review.

Only people who have actually been drone bombed can write songs about drone bombings and bring light to this subject. Get out of your ass dude. There's nothing wrong with an artist using their medium to bring issues to light. You're being more offensive by saying that someone can't write songs about this stuff.

Guess you better start condemning every film maker that has made a period piece about a time of suffering if they weren't actually there or didn't actually have to go through it.

4 Degrees is a banger but I have no desire to listen to the rest of the album. Seems like the sort of thing which I won't be able to dislike without receiving backlash, like the Ghostbusters trailer.
