Had this playing in the car on way home from work. Turned off after about 5 tracks, vocals just bore me making it tedious to listen to.

"Yeah, weren't they in high school when they started out? I wouldn't put it past them to think up such a pseudo-provocative name back then and retroactively justify it. I would too"
Sure, justify it, but being defensive about it makes me take their position much less seriously. That and the fact it's a pretty shaky justification as it is.

@necropig
Give it a shot with good speakers and without ambient car loudness though. This one definitely sounds messy upon first listen, but gets better each time, and the production is rich enough this time around to justify a concentrated listen on a good set of over-ears.

those ambient/electronic songs towards the end are so bad and pointless

Yeah it's pretty crazy when you have a song as good as The Void Alone and a song as bad a Les Silences on the same album

honestly the first half of this + amber gaze are rly great and basically the album i wanted them to make back when i first heard nomadic
but then it just falls off big time and i completely lost interest by the time that garbage rolls around

agreed. album would be a lot better without tracks 9-11

yeah but even the metal tracks on side B are mostly uninteresting. the sound just wears thin fairly quick, its v cool at first but for me they cant sustain it for a full album

I gave this another try, and actually do enjoy Wind for Wings. I still don't really like any of the songs that they previewed, but Dreamless and Adrenaline are cool.

I think "Les Silences" is a pretty good song honestly and an excellent breather (although in a weird position on the album).
Disclaimer: I like electronic music and I'm French so I understand what the guy on the track is saying (I'm wondering from which movie this sampler is coming from though), which is actually making the track better... Not sure I would like it as much without understanding (it's basically about life, getting old, the fear of death... that kinda stuff).
Excellent review btw! I'm not sure I like this album as much as TFP, it sounds a bit too lengthy and not as focused as TFP... but at least the production is not completely fucked.

"when have people looked to Viet Cong and asked them to explain themselves"
I don't know, probably around the time that they changed their name due to vociferous criticism? They announced on 21 April that they would be performing as "Preoccupations," from now on.

Viet Cong were funny about the name change and it's origin if you look up the interview. I laughed a lot. Basically they said they never took the name seriously and they were surprised anyone else did.
Anyway, the more I listen to this, the less I like it. It's okay. Amber Gaze sounds a lot like a good Impending Doom song.

@Nomos
I'll give it a listen on the Dac and cans soon. Too busy with dark souls when I get home :p
Sound system in the car is actually good, got a sub and custom speakers. Get through a lot of my listening there.
