Everyone's gotta start somewhere dude. It just came as a surprise to me how recently you got into it considering how active you are on all things djent/prog related.
And Contortionist doesn't suck. Language I is one the best prog songs of the 21st century.

I guess stuff like Dream Theater or similar prog bands never got me interested (even though I like DT now but not relevant), Contortionist mixed in electronics with djent, and also had some metalcore/deathcore/hardcore tendancy's in it as well, and guess that's what gravitated me into liking it. Oh yeah, I also went through a phase where I thought memphis may fire was the best band in the world... I was not so smart back then

i dont like dream theater or any of the old prog metal bands actually
but haken is the closest you can come to them with a modern band
close but actually great

That's cos they also dj0nt. Check out The Pineapple Express who do something similar, but with an Indian twist.

The more I listen to Haken the more I like them. This album is pretty good actually. Probably a little underrated, I like Vector much more though

I think the highs on this are higher than the ones on The Mountain

Bound By Gravity is one of the best Sigur Ris songs that aren't written by Sigur Ros.

I’m jamming this band’s whole discog for the first time and this is easily the best so far.

Don't know about best, but it's definitely my favourite.

I suppose this is the most accessible and therefore easily enjoyable Haken album
|
| |
Accessibility plays no role in my enjoyment of an album. This cuts a lot of the unnecessary fat and cheese from previous albums and the synths are much more enjoyable. They reigned themselves in rather than being overindulgent and it works way better in Haken’s case imo. I’m halfway through Vector now and it looks like they’re continuing that trend.
That being said, Mountain was good but there were some annoying parts. They’ve def gotten progressively better, with Aquarius being really hard for me to stomach and each album cutting out some of the frustrations I had with the previous one. They’ve been on a continuous upward trend and I hope they keep it up

Does anyone know what kind of style Red Giant is? It's great, but I wished I had a name for it

sounds like electro-pop, with prog rock touches and a post-rock climax. But that's all I can think of. Maybe check out Planetarium by Sufjan and co.?
Also, I just came here to say how magnifiscent the solos on Lapse are. Fuck, some great fusion solos right here.

Flug's DT comparison feels pretty accurate, especially for this album. I think Affinity relies more on Haken's riffwriting skills than probably any of their other stuff and vocals work better than on Virus too. Though, i really don't like the snare drum as soon as they drop their 80's gimmicks. Sits too centric imo.

Underrated album, it's one of their best. I want them to go colourful again

This album is so versatile, and still cohesive, and riffs, and attacks, but is also tender.... Ughhhh I want them to go colourful again [2]
