@ boney, I’m with you man. Gonna comb through their albums soon. I believe both our introductions/binges of Modest Mouse’s discography also overlapped

Damn, just took a little taste of these guys and they’re phenomenal. Listened to The Woodpile, I Wish I Was Sober And one more.

Really looking forward to going through their discog. After The National it’s these guys, then I have The Dear Hunter and The Antlers after.

Crazy I had never heard of these guys. Never would have “discovered” them if it wasn’t for sput. Warts and all, this is a great site. Great peeps. The warts are even part of the appeal lol.

It's definitely their weakest but still decent

Aaron Dessner of The National actually produced this album, you can really tell.

The Midnight Organ Fight is always the best place to start.

For me its Midnight = Painting > Winter > Pedestrian >>>>> Sing the Greys

Also dont forget to check out the Recorded Songs EP at some point, its the last thing Scott ever recorded under the Frightened Rabbit name. Gives it an eerie quality.

Do you think going chronologically from the beginning would be cool? That’s my plan. Or is starting at Grey gonna maybe turn me off a little lol.

Hard to say, i started at Midnight Organ Fight like most people seem to and so they already sounded like a "real" band. so it was interesting for me to come back to Sing the Greys after hearing everything else and hearing this sort of proto-Frightened Rabbit music. Honestly its not very good, but already being a fan and hearing their humble, amateurish beginnings gave it a sort of charm to me. So i think i like it more than i would have if i started with it.

i tell people to check it out last if you really like the band and youre curious. Its just not an essential listen, you wouldnt be missing much. I see it as more of a bonus for people who already love the band.

That’s a good point man, thanks. I’ll just start with Midnight. I started with Vheissu with Thrice, then went back to the beginning and went chronologically. Really worked out well that way.

Sing The Greys is their least good album but it’s very underrated because of what follows. Square 9, Music Now and Be Less Rude are fantastic tracks.

Some specific non album songs are essential too: Boxing Night, It’s Christmas So We’ll Stop, Fuck This Place

In fact, I ranked the bulk of all of their tracks in my lists :-)

I like The Greys, Music Now, and Yawns, but even the best ones feel undercooked.
