I caved and listened early.

>'Error' and 'This Link is Dead' would not be out of place on either the self-titled album or 'White Pony'; The latter of which having an outro that is Deftones at their heaviest and rawest in more than a decade.

>'The Spell of Mathematics' is more unabashed Meshuggah worship, with Steph showing off the lower end of the 9-string on this one. Song still rules, though.

>'Pompeji' would have been a better album closer than 'Ohms'. Features an incredible synth sequence that would fit right in in a Nicolas Winding-Refn film. Some heavy Cliff Martinez vibes there.

>'Urantia' in a quality better than a toaster, sounds absolutely amazing. I imagine this will be a third single/video. Honestly should have been one over 'Ohms'.

>'Headless' also has some more 9-string lower end Meshuggah worshipping going on, as well as an intro similar to 'Genesis' that feels like it could be on KNY. Amazing chorus on this one.

All in all, it's a massively inspired effort after the ordinariness of 'Gore'. Not only is Steph's influence featured front and center, but Abe also gets to shine on this album. Absolutely cutting loose at all the right moments, that reminds you of what an under-appreciated drummer he's been throughout his tenure.

Production is amazing. It's textured, layered, mixed well, etc. If they continue making music after this album, I would really like to see them continue their renewed relationship with Terry.

While the two singles, and the intro of 'Headless' feel like Deftones of the last ten years, the overall collectiveness of the album feels like a modern mesh of White Pony and their self-titled album.

If 'Diamond Eyes' was a rebirth for Deftones; I think 'Ohms' has to be the culmination of their youth repackaged and reworked in a way that will work for their fans in 2020 and beyond.

They fucked around and made an album of the year candidate.

Oh, it works.

But for the people that have been butthurt about Steph playing that style since DE, that song won't win them over.

Shit sounds guttural, though.

After two full listens I'll say this: the mastering on this thing is sublime, and there's a lot to enjoy and I'm sure it'll only continue to grow. However, I am a bit disappointed with the choruses, which overall I feel are VERY weak. It's hard to collect my feelings on this right now, but I can certainly say this thing isn't better than KNY, but it's certainly a step-up from Gore as a whole and probably on par with Diamond Eyes. I generally don't like giving initial impressions because these things often change dramatically over the first few days.

I'm also going through my second listen.

While I agree the album may not be 'chorus heavy' per se, I think the melodies and overall vocal performance from Chino are still strong.

What it may lack in powerful choruses, it makes up for with catchiness and ambiance throughout.

Just the overall structure of the album is enough to make me happy.

Honestly, after Gore, I wasn't convinced they had another effort like this in them.

I am also a massive fan of KNY (there are times where I even prefer it to DE) -- but I think upon first couple of listens, one thing I like about Ohms over even KNY and DE is the return to a more rawer sound. It's funny, the production is still polished and massive, but it's still gritty enough to remind you of what this band was pre-DE days.

One more thought as I finish listening and going to sleep... they definitely need to keep letting Steph take the horns as far as the musical direction.

You can tell he was happier than a motherfucker to do this album based on his effort here. Riffs for days.

The catchiness usually comes from the choruses. Can't say I find a lot of it especially catchy, but I do think there are some beautiful moments here. Gonna take a few days to fully form an opinion on this one. I can definitely agree though that it's nice to hear some stuff that sounds like it wouldn't be out of place on their self-titled, or SNW. As a long-time fan of Deftones, hearing this makes me feel a bit nostalgic.

And as I'm writing this I'm already enjoying some of these tracks much more than I did on my first spin. ACK This is why I usually refrain from discussing albums until they've had time to sink in lol.

I think 'Urantia' is catchy as hell, if nothing else.

I also think people will sleep on 'Ceremony'.

While I don't think there are songs with overpowering choruses like Digital Bath or Change, or even more modern tracks like Sextape, I think the melodic sections and moments of extended singing from Chino that are there, are far more memorable than anything off of Gore.

'Pompeji' has such a god damn great intro and outro.

To me, that song would epitomize what I mean about the album still being catchy even if there aren't moments of overused choruses.

Seriously though, the outro for Pompeji should have been 10-hours long.

Perfect for night driving and zoning out, thinking about shit when you just need some alone time.

Love when they provide those types of moments.

Actually finding Radiant City very catchy now that I'm hearing it again. I personally think Sextape is extremely overrated and has a v/ boring chorus but otherwise I can agree that there isn't a staple song on here the same way that Digital Bath and Change are, but this thing is so tightly executed on the whole. I don't think one particular song shines above others but that's just fine really. Ceremony is fantastic, that one actually drew me in immediately. I feel like people will sleep on Error though.

Second half of Pompeji is indeed gorgeous -- honestly sounds a bit like an 80s synth, very reminiscent of Stranger Things.

New album is seriously incredible so far, surprised how heavy and hookless it is but only on track 5

Havent heard the record yet but you saying "I don't think one particular song shines above others" in a way that they are all great, makes me way more happy than records with the usual 'highs' and 'lows'.
