I think this is much less deathcore than their previous albums, which were fully deathcore basically

Ok, listened all the way through.
I gotta say, this is very good, but by no means a masterpiece. While the scope is great and there are some standout tracks, the album is at the same time awfully devoid of dynamics. While there are nice heavy/mellow shifts, there is little in terms of buildup. An even greater problem is how stagnant the melodies are - it's mostly the same melody all the way through the album, 3 beats in a major chord then the 4th beat in one half a tone higher. Of course there is respite from that, with the "castle in the sky" sequel being very beautiful (probably the best track). But yeah, them going for a "grand" sound sadly came at the cost of this being melodically underwhelming.
Still a very pleasant listen though, I might come back to this. The lyrics didn't bother me at all, much better than say, Carnifex's "fuck fuck fucking" all the time.
This is like 3.8-3.9. Better as a whole than their previous albums, but those have better-written single songs. Anyway, Scryers of the Ibis is considerably better than this.

yeah this album is kind of one note in terms of dynamics and feels like the variations of the same ideas executed throughout the entire album. I kind of wish it was shorter so I could listen to it more than two times to give my criticisms because holy shit did it feel like a chore... I don't know much about their deathcore days because I don't really like the genre, but they seem to have taken some of the worst parts of progressive metal when writing this album.

I'm worried to embark in this because fuck its so long

I wouldn't go so far as to call this a chore, but it could afford to be 5 songs shorter, for sure. I'm not saying it won't grow on me though, but the intricacies of this album are rather delicate (and that is an euphemism for "slightly boring")

their name is a parody of Verb the Noun bands

I'm not sure if the name's a parody, they just decided to go with something less pretentious after many options were explored.
Still, they ended up being right among Iwrestledabearonce, We Butter Bread With Butter or No Penguins In Alaska in terms of band name

While I do prefer Scryers of the Ibis on the whole, I feel like this has an entirely different purpose to serve. Ovid's Withering have such a unique sound within the deathcore realm that they don't need to worry about full-album cohesion; the only thing linking tracks to tracks is lyrical theme and the band's trademark sound.
Personally, the use of repeated motifs and progressions in this record is used sparingly enough for it to stay fresh while holding the album together as a whole piece, rather than a playlist. As a singular piece, I prefer Odyssey. But every track on SotI is so damn good. I just find SotI to be a monumentally drawn out undertaking for single-session listening.
Oh, and torts, idk how accurate my judgement is, but seeing how you gave half of Pierce the Veil's and Death Grips' discographies 4.5s, but Dartkthrone's ABITNS a 3.0, you will likely hate this record. Though you did give xSPONGEXCOREx a 4.0 so our tastes do match up somewhere.

Wow you just made me realise how crap torts' ratings are

Glad I could be of assistance. Though my ratings probably aren't much better, but I did get a solid laugh making my way through tort's ratings list. Sorry to anyone who gave this a 2.5 or lower; that is almost a couple of hours y'all are never getting back but A+ for effort

Way too long for its own good

This is a lot better than I expected this to be, but I wouldn't listen to this as a full album because it's way too long. Production is also pretty messy, which kinda ruins the songs.

A bit too long but it's still god

It's meant to be a journey for the listener, I myself enjoy the length a lot. It's better to jam to when you have alone time.
