The new album is their best since Iowa, and maybe just as good as that one.

it's gonna need more listens to say for sure, but it's def a step up from this and All Hope Is Gone (both of which I enjoy to an extent). it doesn't dethrone s/t or Iowa for me but I can see it rivaling Vol. 3.

wooooohh there cowboy, Iowa is a hard underrated (for this site's average standards) classic album of lethargy and angst filled nihilistic apathy that's essentially unparalleled at least in the genre. the new album is fantastic don't get me wrong, but nothing will recapture what these guys were going through during the recording of Iowa imho

"but nothing will recapture what these guys were going through during the recording of Iowa imho"
Definitely, I agree with everything you said.
Quality-wise is up there tho, nostalgia wise and everything else Iowa obviously edges this. But I am pleasantly surprised with the new one, Corey in particular sounds rejuvenated.

you summed up Iowa pretty well and made me realize what it is that makes the first two albums stand out to me.
the s/t felt rabid, like a perfect encapsulation of frenetic energy and a vibe I can best describe as "paranoid schizophrenic". then Iowa was that portrait of rage and nihilism that you described.
nothing since has felt quite as focused in terms of a particular mood or vibe so it doesn't hit quite as hard.

as always I hate this insanely loud mastering but three tracks in they actually sound vital and inspired. pretty cool to hear from a band like this now

This album is actually right up there with the debut or Iowa for me. It truly is great and it's awesome to see them really re-invigorated again. Sounds awesome

Waiting for my CD copy to arrive on Friday. Always tempted by leaks but seem to be able to resist most of the time.
Man imagine the chaos and uproar if the new Tool were to leak in the next week or two.

A Slipknot album receiving mass praise in 2019? Yep, it’s hype time.

Spiders is the biggest WTF moment in the entire record, the most experimental thing they've done, and somehow they really pulled it off!
