If you overplay Hard Sun then you've got Lips...and if you overplay both you've still got Swing Low. Winner

That's Beth Orton warbling at the end of Hard Sun. Right around the time she was doing great things, I wonder why this album was so overlooked? Band implosion, record company collapse, Oasis fever? I dunno.

I'm just amazed that not even the underground picked up on this.
And yeah when those drums (and the strings before them) on Hard Sun kick in I just fall apart. These songs are just so amazingly constructed.

And good ole Sinead guests on Lips too
Not sure what happened but the band split before the release. Often record companies sit on releases and shunt them back down the queue before finally scaling back the marketing push and effectively burying it without an honest chance

Yeah it's just not of its time I 'spose. That vid says it all, Gavin Clarke is obviously frazzled, anxious as hell and out of place giving a performance of genuine beauty and seconds later Jo Wiley is making some ludicrous comment about bum fluff.

Ah, didn't realize the band was defunct before the album dropped. That would definitely do a lot to explain why it didn't catch on.

Yeah zak seeing him in that video actually makes me more inclined to 5 this, seeing that face I can just feel even more how real this stuff is. Listening now after watching that video and I love it more than ever.

I knew ya would Boney.
Check the living room doc mentioned in Doofs review. The man was normal as fuck and was openly accepting that he'd fucked his mind on drugs. There's some gut wrenching stuff in there. The line that gets me is him saying "50 percent of the time I think what I'm doing is great and then the other 50 percent just thinks I'm a twat"
It's a tragedy. How the fruit tree blooms

Aresx - hope you like the album but it's more folk rock/indie folk, it's not a Nick Drake soundalike

Absolute madness and I seriously have to calm down a bit but I think I've found my greatest album of all time.
It's not 'perfect' by any means but when it comes to a personal connection to the soul this thing is a one off.
It's like the bloke from school who was always a bit off kilter but stuck around and had Mr Freezes (ice poles) with the rest of us fucked off, fried his mind came back home and laid his soul bare and we all 'get' it.

Thinking it might be all time top 10 for me, I keep questioning whether it can hold its own against Radiohead, The National and the like but then I listen to the thing and think of course it can :D

The National was the yard stick I went by. High Violet one of the greatest of all time and although not similar musically some of the themes are there or thereabouts and they're the last band who really captivated me but is it this? This trumps it.
