was listening to this again this week and I'm still amazed by the production quality here. The drums have some much bang, the guitars so much growl, that you'd think ambient/post-rock bits wouldn't mesh as well as they do, yet somehow wittr make it work. If they were to go back to this sort of production style idec what riffs they play it'd be immense either way.

This record has terrific production in general and perfect production for this type of music, (even the DR is amazing, vinyl clocks in at ~12) The mix is great and instruments and vocals aswell, so yeah, it absolutely rules.

given how atmospheric it is the style shouldn't even work. The toms have a nice punch, the guitars are mean, yet it oozes atmosphere.

yeah, but these guys knew what they were doing here, like it wasn't just here's some riffs, and that production is fine let's go with that.. this is one of the most realized visions of music I've ever heard. I think it was important for them to mix it up after this though, but I'm still pretty torn about the new one's direction and sound. I'm too biased with these guys for my own good.
