@Boney Nah Swans doesn't really count. I gave you lots of recs once didn't I?

Wasn't sure with Swans, I know some of their stuff is characterized (at least partly) as post-rock though.

You might've Mongi, I made a post-rock rec list like a year ago but I never really checked anything from it. I will eventually though.

I'm joking, Swans could be post-rock - from what I can make out you could argue anyone is post-rock, and I can only imagine what's been tagged with that genre on sput...

Who cares if they sounds nothing alike? They're still post rock. And to say anything could be post rock is absolutely ridiculous.

Well Doof in my limited understanding post-rock is more of an approach than it is a style, using rock instruments primarily for texture and atmosphere rather than melody, and eschewing standard song structures.

At least that's the common thread in all the post-rock I've heard.

This is why we use rym for genre tags.

If the ten main proponents of a genre sound absolutely nothing alike I fail to really see the point of the genre tag but it doesn't offend me or anything like that

I hardly see that as a negative. That makes the approach even more exciting and diverse for me personally.

I can agree that as a genre designation post rock is more an attempt to find something to call a group of highly individual artists who happen to have a similar approach, rather than a descriptive name for a specific style, but I mean where else are you going to lump these artists?

Under the broad experimental rock tag, maybe, but they're not all necessarily experimental in their approach to sound or structure, particularly since there *is* actually a commonality in the approach.

Ambient doesn't work either since post rock has an emphasis on structure and not just sound.

But take all that I say with a grain of salt, I may talk like an expert but really I'm a novice at best.

Most genres are like that i mean how many indie rock bands there is that doesn't sound nothing alike?

Plus it's only the big bands that have different sound and approach which is def a good thing, all of these bands also have tons of clones (except Talk Talk), so there is plenty of post-rock that sounds the same anyway.
