Finally listened to this, first impression is that it's nearly as godly as Laughing Stock, especially the opening trio/suite. I'm interested to see how it holds up on repeat listens.

Even better than you can imagine.

The Rainbow is perfect, that harmonica is orgasmic.
Sound the victim's song...

Ok so the first three tracks on this (or the opening track on vinyl) might be better than Laughing Stock as a whole.
The second half of this is amazing too but not quite on the same level.

basically yeah. the rainbow might be the best song ever, in that, it might even be better than new grass.

Yeah The Rainbow is just insane.
I feel like this one is also a bit more post-rock-esque as well. In particular the structure of that opening suite seems to sort of foreshadow the whole drawn out quiet-build-loud thing.
There's also seemingly a bit more emphasis on guitar texture on this and it's not quite as free-form as LS is.

That's right man. That's why this and LS definitely paved the way for many, many post rock builds.

indeed, in that respect, laughing stock is more free-form and boundless than this one is.

I'm still only working through the post-rock basics but this and LS are honestly better than any of the "real" post-rock I've heard so far.

There is also more silence and jazz on LS
basically what Cyg said

LS is the best of the best when it comes to post rock but the genre is still my favorite

def dude i think only F♯A♯ is up there with the Talk Talk albums. Still need to listen to most post-rock tho.

Yeah F#A# is amazing.
Of the "obvious" post-rock classics (that I'm aware of) I still need to hear most Godspeed albums, Slint, Bark Psychosis, Tortoise, Mogwai, and Swans (if they count).

even tho ls is better than pretty much all post-rock albums calling it "the best post-rock album" seems unfair when no other post-rock is approached in that way, and i'm sure mark had no idea what "post-rock" was in 1991
