I've loved Divers since it came out, I just never got around to Newsom's previous albums.

Along with Laurel Halo, Julia is probably one of the finest artists of this generation.

It's as amazing as that one Jenny Hval album where she does that thing crossed with the 'Bjork wearing vagina hemet' album

I had my doubts about the new album at first but it's a 4.5. Just a notch below this, which is undoubtedly my favorite of hers.

‘The Ys of this decade’

Ok it’s sort of similarly precocious - but also kinda atrocious. ‘Ys’ BURIES it, drags the body, digs the hole, buries it, covers it up, pees on the disturbed soil

Ooh hoo hoo ha ha ha.

no point comparing them imo.

Ys is better i guess?

To be fair it’s a 3/5 album from track 7 onwards.

Just the first 6 tracks are incredibly annoying - real artistically masturbatory, like worst of the year masturbatory

2nd half is better, i agree...

1st super good, too, just that it doesn't reach the peaks of i shall love 2, underneath the moon or i would rather see.

She definitely does away with her biggest indulgences in the first half. Not sure yet if that was the better way to go, on the one hand it gives more motivation to sit through the whole thing, on the other it means you're already a bit worn out by the time the best stuff comes around.

My second spin did sit a bit better but it's still hard to say whether I'll end up falling in love with it. Could go anywhere from a 2.5 to a 4.5 for me.
