Even if this is more accessible, there's great energy here plus really strong songwriting.

Empty Threat might be the best pop song of the year in my book.

The real complaint I have about this album is that there is a serious need for bass and hard hitting synths (as someone already noted). It was part of why "The Mother We Share" and "Lies" were such energetic and engaging songs.

you people are seriously insane. this doesn't even come remotely close to bones. mother we share, sink, gun, tether, night sky, science/visions, by the throat - that album had a slew of fantastic songs, all of which were catchy and distinctly different. this is the definition of safe, by comparison. and it has good songs too - leave a trace, never-ending circles, high enough - but pretty much everything sounds the same, and some of the choruses are so vanilla (keep you on my side, make them gold is okay but sort of annoying, empty threat, playing dead). everything seems turned down - even the latter-half synth driven clearest blue feels like a weaker imitation of tether. nothing on here is as dancey, intense, dark, or catchy.
also: no bloody way in hell is this better than depression cherry

depression cherry was boring as all hell, at least I can enjoy this one.

people who call depression cherry boring as hell are people who haven't given it a fair chance. first time i heard it i thought it was insanely dull, but levitation, sparks, ppp, space song, days of candy are among their best songs.

This starts well and ends well - the first three or so at each end are pretty nice, and I'd go as far to say that Bury It and Afterglow are among the best things they've done. The middle section... ugh. Just felt recycled after a while.

Leave A Trace is pretty underwhelming after repeat listens. fortunately, this album has better songs to offer.

Thinking about how many just super fun songs with great melodies were on the first record, this has maybe 3 songs that are close to those. I don't see how Empty Threat or half the other meh songs on here can stand up to Night Sky or even Lungs come to think of it, which was the worst song on Bones.
Never Ending Circles, Leave a Trace, Clearest Blue, Playing Dead, Afterglow are all great. Rest are completely skippable (maybe Bury It is okayish)

This album is so front heavy. Everything after the first five tracks or so except for "Down Side of Me" just does nothing for me.

It's not as good as Bones, no, but it's still really god damn good. I listen to it every time I'm in my car and it hasn't grown off me at all after 20+ listens.
