Perfect follow-up. Satisfies fans of the first album by providing new ideas in the same exact style. Every song is a banger. "More of the same" is only a veritable complaint if you don't really like this kind of music. For me, "more of the same" is a godsend when it's done so well.

biggest challenge for this group is to actually change up their sound

Enough of this obsession where every band has to change their sound every album. If you don't like this sound, then don't listen to them and listen to a band with a different sound. Problem solved. Chvrches sound like Chvrches.

^ Well-said. I think this is better, it's more consistent than bones too. The male vocals are a lot better on this album and more suited to the songs he sings.

I didn't like this nearly as much as the debut unfortunately.

I love this miles more than the debut, only stuff off bones I enjoyed was mother we share and recover, this is a vast improvement in my eyes

Also Anthracks is right, I don't understand the obsession with a band having to change things up. What's more unfortunate is when a band does change their sound and people go "Man I miss their old sound"

It sucks that you can't please everyone, people need to lighten up

pretty sure boring isn't related to bad and ambitious isn't related to good

That's what I was hinting towards near the end of my review, although some change is key as time progresses. I think the problem is that people expect an overhaul in style with each release, when it's more important to master an approach before moving on to another one...there's too many bands that try to stay edgy, and by doing so end up a jack of all trades but master of none.

It's alright. Better than Beach House's new album by a longshot.

I think Chvrches succeeded in creating a very accessible and more streamlined record which rubs some people the wrong way.

Also, on the topic of the "sound changing" thing. I feel like there is a fine line between overhauling your sound and doing enough to differentiate one release from another, and people get that mixed up way too often. A band doesn't have to completely change to stay good, thats a horrible expectation to have. Though a good band can usually do enough to keep things interesting for anyone listening to an album in a single sitting, which I feel like this album doesn't do well enough.

Still plenty of fun to be had though, so props to that.

Why though? What's this obsession with accessible/mainstream/melodic being bad? There's bad pop music of course, but some of the most experimental, off the wall albums out there are also some of the worst.

said much better than I would've. This is chvrches successfully refining their original sound. Not as many shining spectacular moments, but makes up for that by being really really consistent

People have to hate pop/mainstream stuff or else they'll lose their l33t creds sowing.

Yeah, I don't really care either way.

If you prefer the first album, then jam the first album.

@sowing - I'm with you, nothing wrong with something being more popular or more appealing to a larger audience, I just think a lot of people feel satisfied being the only person who likes something and the minute it gains larger appeal they're out. Some people can't stand liking something that *gasp* many other people like.

I don't get how this is consistent. It's the definition of inconsistent. Great tracks mixed with utter janky filler

This exactly...I always point to Jimmy Eat World as an example. They are probably one of the most mainstream alternative bands out there and, at least for about a decade, they got it done without changing much at all. Change for the sake of change is almost always a mistake.

I think Chvrches have changed plenty, it's just towards creating more accessible pop rock music and not their Kid A.
