Before you write off Dissection as simply another black/death outfit, there’s a few things you should know. Firstly, their uncompromising lyrical output is devoid of clichés, so is the studded image but minus the make-up and the album is awesome and completely without bullshit. Storm of the Light’s Bane is a heavy, fast, malevolent orchestration full of musical ability and some excellent riffage that harkens back to the mid-80’s German legends Destruction. Dissection however are powerful with every track an epic with proof in the listening. Unhallowed, Night’s Blood and Thorns of Crimson Death (all at six minutes plus!) move from arrangement to aggro without becoming faceless blasting, although that’s here too. Even if you don’t like black metal, you can’t deny that Dissection are a classy bunch of muso’s who know how to write heavy as fuck, dark and twisted music. It’s just a shame more black metal isn’t this, more than just a cacophony of speed and white noise. Purveyors of the extreme and lovers of talented guitar playing are gonna love this.
