"Well let me put this into perspective since you listen to a lot of metal
I don't find "good" metal that much different than "bad" metal because it doesn't resonate with me, especially if it's like metalcore"
I mean, point taken, but I did say that the style doesn't resonate with me... (btw I don't listen to that much metal tbh). From the inside, though, being someone who has definitely listened to enough of this + related artists, I don't necessarily get the hype when compared to the contemporaries that are pretty widely panned.

LA Hallucinations is top 4 on this album yes

Like... when I listen to genre's I don't particularly care about, I can usually pick out pretty easily the stuff that I like or at least understand the sentiment of those who adore the most acclaimed artists that are thrusted to the front of the "music-people" zeitgeist. I really just can't hear it with most of the stuff surrounding CRJ, Swift, Charlie XCX, Lorde - most of the pop artists that internet-music-folk will rush to the defense of. I really can't be the only one.

Well listen to say Lorde's Supercut compared to Jessie J's Domino lmao
Just different levels of lyricism and production

@Pitchfork CRJ is certainly not thrust to the forefront like the other artists you mentioned. She has far less mass appeal than then and CRJ has emerged as kind of a cult following in the pop sphere.

I think what he meant by "music-people" zeitgeist is how CRJ gets more acclaim from music enthusiasts than, say, pop artists like Katy Perry or Meghan Trainor but he doesn't really hear the difference in quality.
Would I be right in saying that, Pitchfork?

I definitely hear the difference. I know what he means, though. I can't really tell much of a difference with genres I haven't really gotten into (jazz, country, etc)
But hip hop, metal, and pop I can certainly tell. Everyone has an ear for different things.

Exactly, yeah. Once you spend a little more time becoming familiar with the trappings of a genre, the differences become more apparent.

This is a pretty decent approximation of my thoughts. I'm sure there is a bit of a blindspot I have because this style isn't something I'm SUPER into, but I can usually pick up on the things that most people thrust forward within even the genres that aren't my cup of tea. Not so much with this type of stuff, or at least to the degree that CRJ (and other related pop artists) are propped up (whilst widely panning all of the artists that aren't entirely dissimilar).

This albums crammed full of bangers but I can't shake the feeling that the pacing is a little off? Like the songs don't flow well with eachother on a full play through, it's a bit mish-mashy. It's lacking that bit of finesse. Dedicated doesn't feel as varied, but the album works really well in a continuous play through.
Not that it ruins the album at all, but just an observation. Always throws me off a little when I come back to it, especially after Gimmie Love. And "When I Needed You" feels so anticlimactic to close the album on. Would've made more sense to swap it with "All That" in my opinion. Party For One and The Loneliest Time on the other hand end their respective albums perfectly for me.

^I'm jealous, have fun!
The pacing on this album is slightly odd indeed. When I listen to this album I seem to always forget about All That, Your Type, and LA Hallucinations until I hear them start playing. I think it must be due to all the peaks and valleys mood-wise here. Not to worry, I like surprises.
I think she finally nailed how give a great sense of closure with a final track on The Loneliest Time. I actually much prefer Party for One as a song, but it never felt like a closer to me, more of a middle of the album type of track. When I Needed You's literal and atmospheric slow fade out are nice, but the album goes out with much more of a whisper than a bang.
