There's a King Crimson-esque grandiosity to it that I wouldn't ascribe to their other releases. It is light on the death metal by their standards, which may be a turn off for some. I know this is probably psycho talk around these parts but I find the songs here much more memorable than those on Parallax II...not to take anything away from that album which I also love.

Yeah this is one of those instances where if some other, not so well known band made this album it'd be received better... but because so many people were introduced to BTBAM through tracks like Mordecai, Alaska, Foam Born etc. they expect a certain kinda vibe that isn't present here. I prob suffer from this myself a bit.

That’s definitely true and I can probably find examples where I fall into that trap with other bands. I just think that mindset is a failure to approach art with an open mind. Immaturity also plays a role.

Five years on and this might be one of the better albums in their disc, whole album flows together so well.

Am I a punk for finding this to be my favourite or second favourite album of theirs?

Nah everyone’s got their preferences. I could see why it would be someone’s favorite even though it’s not even close to mine.

I tried Colors the other day and barely got to the end, too chaotic and screamy for me tbh. This has more melody and title song is a fucking banger.

Parallax II is cool tho

I’m all about the chaos so I prefer their earlier output. Their recent stuff is still amazing though.

colors era btbam was progressive metalcore with subtle mathcore elements or am I off base with that?

Sput told me progressive metalcore was bands like periphery, tesseract, david maxim mic though? that can't be right

this is more like dream theater tbh, putting it slightly above periphery

I think perhaps the best way to describe them is simply progressive, because they are the very definition of the word, so cutting edge, so unique, there is nothing that's like btbam, they are one of a kind
