Personally, I think Zwan was the last time I felt like Corgan sounded "normal" to me. Or maybe thefutureembrace, but it's hard to tell with that one. I think golden era Pumpkins probably was lightning in a bottle to some degree, but I really feel like something changed about Corgan's whole approach to music in the mid-2000s.

Lots of small things I think. D'arcy apparently challenged him a lot, and there's no one there to do that anymore. He took singing lessons in the late 90s and has since put his vocals high and dry in the mix on pretty much every album. And then some lyrics have been really bad ("lover you're strange" becoming something of a SP meme)
