Tremonti's band has so much potential, if only they would just let go of the song structure! It gets boring quickly. I'll have to give it another listen though, the instrumentation alone makes it a good album. I dig Flying Monkeys.

Change to "even though they have lived differently from their peers"
Apart from that, great review man. Be sure to be consistent with what punctuation you use for album titles and song titles-i.e. make the song and album titles different from each other so the reader knows how to distinguish between the two, especially if they haven't yet heard the album in question. I gave this a couple of listens earlier today and liked a great number of Tremonti's main riffs, particularly in the title track, "Arm Yourself" and "Tie the Noose". I don't think it's strong all the way through, a few of the songs in my opinion are somewhat repetitive and boring at times, but it's mostly great stuff.

Listened to parts of this and it riffs really hard. Might have to give it a full spin.

I thought this was going to sound like Alter Bridge B-Sides. I was pleasantly surprised by this album. It is way better than All I Was and it stands nicely to Fortress. I'm glad I gave this a chance and listened to it more than once. Nice review!

I'm going to guess he plays lead and sings live as well? That's pretty damn impressive, with some of the riffs he brings.

Proving that 'All I Was' was not a one-off, Alter Bridge guitarist Mark Tremonti & his band are back with the moniker's 2nd LP 'Cauterize'. This is a lyrically darker & more introspective beast than its predecessor, but that doesn't stop the now quartet (having added bassist Wolfgang Van Halen) from combining its 2 paramount traits of heaviness & melody to good effect. Not only has Tremonti's vocals improved markedly, but as has Garrett Whitlock's punchy drumming. There's still a predictability to the song structures, but this satisfying record contains no filler & suggests that the act are here to stay. Recommended Tracks: Another Heart, Cauterize, Radical Change & Sympathy.

Sowing's recent Alter Bridge review reminded me to check this project out. The mainstream rock vocals don't really seem to work with the attempts at heavier riffing.
A lot of the riffs feel like metal riffs that a high schooler would write. Basically, the sound of someone writing metal riffs in a very superficial way.
Tremonti is obviously an excellent guitarist and interviews suggest that he actually listens to a lot of metal. But when I hear what he's come up with here, I get the sense that he probably hasn't actually spent that much time playing metal riffs, giving his work here a very superficial and bland sound. I guess its also quite limited by the fact that he wanted to sing on this project.

I never realized how necessary Wolfgang's bass was needed here until I hear Dying Machine. It's like fucking night and day in terms of quality.
