And don't worry about the lyrics. They're all about drugs and sex, so you're not missing anything there.

How's the themes of the lyrics going to detract from their quality?

They don't. Almost every alt rock band of the 90s was about drugs and sex so...
|
| |
"They don't"
Then how would the themes make the lyrics "nothing to be missed"?

I see you're not too fond on 90s music. Think of the lyrics as just another instrument, they are not trying to be thought-provoking but to create another layer, so it doesn't matter if you understand them or not.
|
| |
"they are not trying to be thought-provoking"
-Not what you said: "They're all about drugs and sex, so you're not missing anything there."
Also, just because you're "not meant" to understand the lyrics, doesn't mean the lyrics aren't there. It's up for the artist to make the lyrics not stand up.

Lyrics are important, any way, they're in spanish and we know only a small part of us in Sputnik speaks spanish so it isn't like it actually matters

Well, if you think sex and drugs are interesting themes then good for you. There's a lot of bands that talk about the same and do that much better and even in your own language. I'm trying to reach the english speaker to listen to this band/side projects despite the language barrier. They just aren't that interesting lirically nor they ever tried to be and therefore your only concern is the music itself. I've listened this band for years non-stop, this is the way I see them, perhaps other people could say different.

"Well, if you think sex and drugs are interesting themes then good for you"
-I don't think they're interesting by default; it's the artist that has to do something interesting out of them. What I take issue with is the fact that you think they're by default boring, or not worth talking about. At least, that was what you said.
EDIT: Yeah, I know the lyrics are not important in Soda Stereo's case, but not for the reason Gard3n says.

You're not wrong. I used to think they were good lirically until I expanded my musical horizons and realised that the lyrics, while average, were beautified by the musical background, they were just a complement. It's not the "what", it's more about the "how".
