Review Summary: Whatcha gonna do?
Tom DeLonge.
The mere mention of the vocalists/instrumentalists name can divide a room down the middle. Many observers see him as the self righteous, former .3333 of Blink 182. Who has let his bombastic ambitions get in the way of what has gotten him to his pedestal within the punk community in the first place. Some observers see him as the genius behind Blink 182, and the creative force behind super groups Boxcar Racer and Angels and Airwaves. Neither opinion is wrong.
Saving the story, DeLonge is no longer a member of Blink 182. So what we have is a
Demo album by the artist released somewhat in spite of Blink kicking him out. Titled
To The Stars... Demos, Odds, and Ends, it is exactly that. And it is much better then most would expect.
As a fan of many of DeLonge's works this writer appreciates the diverse nature of the demos of the album. There is no mystery in which song was crafted for which group. "Landscapes" would not have been out of place on Angels and Airwaves
Stomping the Phantom Brake Pedal. Whereas "The Endless Summer" would not have been a stranger on Blink 182's
Neighborhoods. Standout track "New World" calls back on the days of Boxcar Racer similarly.
It is when Tom steps out of his comfort zone that he shines the brightest. "Suburban Kings" is exceptional because of its autobiographic nature, telling the story of his life growing up and discovering music as his passion and creative outlet in a more contemporary rock song. In a similar vein "The Invisible Parade" harks on his brother coming home from the war in Iraq. The song utilizes an acoustic guitar, and Tom's voice, without effects. Something rarely heard anymore.
At one particular instance though, the demonstration nature of this album rears its ugly head. "Golden Showers in the Golden State", is a lyrical dud. Written to be an anthem of sorts about being a "punk" in California. This includes fornicating, and urinating on peoples faces.... in California. It falls on deaf ears and seems to be a little bit of stretch for DeLonge, who is almost 40 years old.
Taken for what it is though
To The Stars... is a solid collection of works not yet completed. If it is a cash grab, be punk and download it. If this is a war between both sides of the Blink feud, let it continue.
