Idk who said that rows is better than comforting sounds, but fuck no. It's a good song, but the build and release in comforting sounds is infinitely more enjoyable and rewarding

I think Rows + Cross The River edges out Comforting Sounds just by a bit. Either way, those are my 3 favorite songs by them. I'm really gonna familiarize myself with every song from Frengers and on over the next few weeks. i need more concrete opinions on their albums as a whole

Someone put the whole Japanese record on Youtube, for those interested.

In a Better Place really just needed a chorus because it feels like it never reaches its peak when it easily could have. I'd love if Learn Our Crystals and Candy Pieces were each a bit longer. I could get lost in the first few minutes of Learn Our Crystals for hours

6.2 on pitchfork. I was kinda expecting that tbh, that or 6.8. They use both of those numbers too much.

I feel like a lot of them should be longer, mostly Zanzibar. There's not another track on the album like it and I loved its direction.

I was positively surprised by the new one. Feels like a good back rub.

It's really grown on me a lot. I'm content with my 4 for it. I kinda thought it should be more of a 3-3.5 and that I was rating it too highly just because I love Mew as much as I do, but it's actually pretty damn great. The only thing is that I change back over to something like No More Stories and realize just how much better it is than their newer stuff and it kinda makes me bummed, but oh well. Still making great stuff regardless.

God, Learn Our Crystals is magical. I don't think they made the right decision to change the beat of it for the outro though. It doesn't really go anywhere unfortunately. Could have been a serious contender for SOTY if they either returned to the first part or really expanded on the ending. Still those first 3mins and 40 seconds are awe-striking.

I think the flow from every song up until Twist Quest (which is still a great song) is amazing, especially the first 3.

It's my third favorite Mew record after Glass Handed Kites and Frengers. It'll probably keep growing on me.

The first 3 are definitely the best. I just think the opening guitar to Candy Pieces All Smeared Out is kinda awkward with the synth alarms, but the song still rules. I'm with you on Learn Your Crystals. It's number 2 for me on the proper album. Heavenly Jewel Thief and Nothingness and No Regrets are still my favorites bonus included. But really nothing here is bad. I even like Ay Ay Ay and In and Better Place even now. It's all still really pretty even if there's not a chorus. It's definitely a crazy grower. It was just a very weird thing to go into initially.

I think it deserves a higher average score. It's a different album from Mew, but it still has every element that made me fall in love with their music on the first place.

It's only got like 11 ratings and someone gave it a 1 (which I honestly can't see anyone giving it that low of a score) lol. I feel it will probably settle at a 3.6 though just because all Mew albums are underrated. Frengers is probably right. GHK should be like a 3.9, but all the others need a boost. No More Stories should be a 4.2-4.3. This should be around 4-4.1. Visuals should be like 3.8-3.9. I'll seriously never understand why GHK has a higher average than No More Stories everywhere.

Because it's better, maybe? Admittedly I haven't heard it in years but GHK was always my favourite over this & Frengers. It's quite a different record & not just a carbon copy of their other stuff, so surely you can't expect a universal opinion.

Yeah but none of their albums are a carbon copy of any of the others. This might be more of a poppier No More Stories, which, I consider to be the closest related, but there's still quite a difference.

GHK is a great album but nothing on there just jerks me by the shoulders and says "hey this is the best Mew song or best Mew album." I can't really say anything on GHK is in my favorites in their discography whilst I pretty much can say favorites exist on pretty much every other album, even Visuals' opener.

I meant that IF albums aren't carbon copies (which in this case, they're not) then you would expect people to have different favourites, if that makes more sense. Some bands have subtle differences between records whereas with these guys (at least with the 3 records I was referencing) the differences are more pronounced/obvious.

GHK is hands down their best album. It's a different genre entirely, and I happen to like through-composed prog rock more than I like experimental indie pop. Maybe it's rated highly here because there are a lot of people who likewise prefer prog rock to indie pop. The individual songs on GHK don't necessarily stand out but the way they flow into each other to make one beast of a narrative journey is something that can't be touched by their other albums. Listen to the transitions from Fox Cub into Apocalypso into Special into Zookeeper's Boy. It's pretty spectacular how they managed to write that string of songs into one journey. I think it's very easy to see why GHK deserves a lot of merit, despite you perhaps not being as into that type of music. I don't like rap/hip-hop, but I'm not going to suggest Kendrick Lamar's average score should be lower.

And come on man. You were giving me a hard time for thinking Rows / Cross the River aren't amazing, yet you don't acknowledge Louise Louisa as being an incredible song? Jonas can literally be heard crying during the final lines of lyrics on that song. If that's not emotional, I don't know what is.

No hard feelings here btw, I'm just arguing from GHK's corner because it absolutely deserves to have people defending it.
