Harris is underrated. His musicianship really shows in this album such as in Wrists of Kings.

This is a highlight for ISIS percussively, I used to drum so maybe that’s part of why I am such a defender. Wavering Radiant is a highlight for them for bass

Think I’m gonna discog run isis for the first time in over a decade and see how my ranking would look now

So I’m done Panopticon and half into Oceanic now and I’m not really having new thoughts but maybe new ways to articulate my old thoughts
Have a feeling Panopticon is going to be near the bottom of my ranking. This is certainly better than it. There are two things I really admire about ISIS, and it’s how conceptually forward they are, and how each of their albums is so unique from the rest. Panopticon might be their weakest conceptually imo, and it just sounds like a lesser companion to Oceanic. Plus, the production on the drums doesn’t work like it does on Oceanic. On oceanic the snare sounds like it’s underwater, Panopitcon has the same snare sound but themes don’t work in it’s favor. Just sounds sporty and kinda shit in that context. That’s not to say Panopticon doesn’t have moments of greatness, as all ISIS albums do, but the existence of such a similar album that is better than it in pretty much every way makes it the most redundant LP in their catalogue. That being said, you do start to see more notes of experimentation with bass tone and pedals that make ITAOT and Wavering Radiant so appealing to me, but the trade off is an odd reduction of ambiance that marks both the albums before AND after it. It’s certainly their most generic work.

So here for the unique and likely divisive potsy isis takes
|

Actually having a nice time. This was my fav metal band ever as a teen and it’s nice that I’m not so disconnected to the genre that I can’t enjoy them anymore.
Anyways, Oceanic is a masterpiece and probably the quintessential post metal album. Maria’s backing vocals are another way that that album absolutely shits all over Panopticon. Shame they haven’t had her back as far as I remember.

So far the only adjustment to my teenage thoughts on isis is that as a teen I was such a itaot defender that I would have put this above oceanic but oceanic is deffs better than this.
So far
Oceanic >>>>>>> ITAOT >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Panopticon

I think I also always used to try and convince myself that pan and oceanic were on par despite knowing in my heart of hearts that that is absolute bullshit

I always did that because of the similar artwork styles. They’re like Pokémon green vs Pokémon blue. It’s logical that they’re on par with each other.

On that UK tour her band supported (with Oceanside too I think) and she came on and did those parts live. I wasnt there : (

“Actually having a nice time”
I can tell : ) glad to hear it!

Oof that would be iconic to see
@spec right? Like naturally

Will say the final quarter of Oceanic isn’t as strong as the first three quarters imo (From Sinking and Hymn) and I’ll award Panopticon the W of having a much better closer
