I see this as more of a sister album to Lateralus. Has many of the same elements but they’re all arranged very differently

Yeah for sure. Doesn’t stop me from thinking there’s a lot of things that could’ve been done a whole lot better.
Never thought the title track(s) needed to be as long as they are. Lipan Conjuring is whack, Lost Keys is far too long when it’s basically just the intro to Rosetta, and honestly Rosetta goes on way too long too. They could’ve easily trimmed off a couple of minutes of that track. And Viginti Tres is just a waste of time.

Any interlude these guys place at the end of their records are unnecessary. Though I will give this one props since unlike Ænima, the interludes do sound like they serve a purpose here and aren’t just added in for lol value

Yeah I totally agree with that. I just thing the actual tracks on Aenima are strong enough to make that not matter.
I can’t say the same for this record.

Whatever you’re into I guess. I think Tool are at their best when they embrace their more weird transcendental side than their more grungy pissed-off side.
If you were to ask me 12 years ago what my favorite of theirs would be it would likely be their first album.

Lipan Conjuring and the closer only amount to like 8 minutes out of nearly 1 hour 20 minutes of quality music, and the latter is at the end so you can just stop listening after Right in Two.
I’m not sure what the point is of Wings for Marie Pt. 1 when the amazing second part covers all of that and more, and there’s a little self-plagiarizing, but other than that this is amazing. Intension is underrated.

I def agree that Intension is underrated, it’s one of my favorites here.
I guess too many songs (really just Vicarious and Jambi) on here just feel like Lateralus B Sides. The Pot and Right in Two are really the only ones that are up to par imo

I mean there’s the age old opinion that vicarious is super similar to schism, and Jambi honestly isn’t super notable aside from the wah(is it a wah?) guitar leads.
And ur trippin art. I get not liking the Pot considering how overplayed it is but Right in Two is straight up one of Tool’s best songs.

The build up to the last couple of minutes is everything. It succeeded at what everything on the new record was trying to do imo

It doesn't help that one of the last heavy riffs of Right in Two is pretty much ripped from 46&2.
