Sufjan has been all over the place lately, but I felt like The Ascension was excellent and fairly underrated. I'm curious to see what the new one is like and if it's closer in style to C&L or to The Ascension/Age of Adz type of stuff.

it's quite close to C&L just a shade more grandiose and with the lyrics less suicidal, more yearning/'working through it'

This seems like it should be good news. My expectations have been slightly raised, then, because I was not a huge fan of the songs that came out prior to today (although they were ok).

Eh. Feels more like a victory lap than a full-fledged project. Doesn’t touch the grandeur of Illinois, the heartache on this record, nor the layered matryoshka-ness of Adz. It lacks magic and identity in a discog that has overwhelming amounts of both.

Will say I desperately need the vinyl for the suf art + essays

The title ‘The Ascension’ would have suited this one a lot, I think it’s unique personality is a transcendence that was necessarily blocked on ‘C&L’ due to the nature of the emotional content there.

I’d say give it time maybe.

Completely disagree with Radio on that one.

Will give it time, just a spit-take after a few listens in sub-optimal conditions. Giving it a spin now with some nice headphones on and it’s already hitting me better. I wouldn’t be even a little sad if I have to eat crow here, dude is a genius and I am but a simple man.

Did you guys see his new blog post holy fuck... First time he has publicly come out and it's because of the death of his partner?! Not a great year for our boy and now Javelin hits even harder. Fuck.

Thanks for the info Ash. My initial listen of Javelin Left it feeling like a nice collection of songs without identity. I'll have to listen more intently now to see if I can be devastated like I was with this album

Wasn't overly feeling the new album at first but now Genuflecting Ghost and My Red Little Fox have me doing a complete 180. Phew. What amazing songs.
