“Love Yourself” is really lame, didn’t hear “With My Whole Heart” yet

pains me to say it but he's been really unimpressive with his songs after C&L
will listen to the new ones but I'm not incredibly optimistic

Planetarium has some of his best tracks imo (although the album as a whole has some problems). Neptune and Earth are amazing. The new songs haven't left much of an impression. It's Sufjan, I guess.

Yea Planetarium is excellent, one of the best records of 2017. Giden and Tonya are fantastic, Sufjan is showing no signs of wavering in quality since this album. Mystery of Love is good too.
Just heard the two new songs. They're alright, seem like intentionally simplistic pop songs. My understanding is they're for pride month.

I really dig Love Yourself. That's my favorite single he's done post - C&L. The rest I kind of thought were... bland. IMO.

Haven’t checked out the new ones, didn’t realize Mystery of Love was disliked. Agreed on Planetarium though, woefully underlistened to. Although I can acknowledge some of the experimentation on it doesn’t work as cohesively with the rest.

This looks to be another band/singer I need to check out. Hear about him a lot here and the ratings are truly impressive. Might go through his discog after I finish Manchester Orchestra, then go throughThe National’s discog.
But what type of music is this — Rock (at least partly). Hard to tell based on the description. Sounds extremely varied in general as far as using/partly using various genres.

He's an indie pop artist overall but his compositions have stretched across multiple genres.

Hmm not a big pop guy. Thanks man. I’ll check out a few songs before I buy any albums.

Basically any sort of “indie” and Sufjan has something for you. This one is more Indie-folk and considered his masterpiece by a lot, Age of Adz is like an indie-electronic-rock hard to explain mishmash, and Illinois is more indie pop, but not about as far away from straightforward pop as you can get.
