like the scene just changed so much in 11 with some many new artists and new sounds coming to the forefront

this will be the biggest year of releases from the biggest artists since then but i dont feel like in general anyone has been creative since that time in progressing the overall vibe and sound

until this came out

good review btw

Noice noice, I feel the same about it in general. I think the only two tracks that I'm not in love with are How Much a Dollar Cost and Complexion. I feel like you can go straight from Hood Politics to Blacker the Berry (maybe my two favorite tracks on the album) and it ends up being more thematically cohesive.

My only qualm with gkmc was that it wasn't pushing any boundaries musically. This album is Kendrick's dissertation. This album will make your average listener have to take a step back and think, "What does it REALLY mean to be a rapper?" It's hip-hop existentialism, not lyrically, but in what an insane conglomeration of musical ideas it is within its genre. This all coming out of maybe the most popular rapper in the world. Good shit

I totally agree. this album bends, but doesn't break the boundaries of hip hop imo

"This album doesn't try to win mainstream appeal, and it doesn't try to upstage his previous effort."

Yes he released an album on the most notorious white-supremacist record label because he wasn't interested in mainstream appeal. cmon guzzo

good review though, way better than the one on the front page... dude you are virtually the only one on the site writing quality hip hop reviews besides Aziz or whatever his name is Gnarlyshelleigh, you didn't deserve a demotion

He may have released it through such a label(I haven't read that much into Interscope, so I can't refute your statement), however to say this album is trying to gain more mainstream attention is definitely untrue. I know a lot of casual Kendrick listeners and they will not enjoy this album because it doesn't "bang" or "he doesn't go hard enough" or some other half hearted reason. The same for people that were on the fence with Kendrick, he isn't winning over anyone that barely liked him or didn't like him with this release, nah mean?

God knows the hip hop exposure on Sput is lacking (not that I'm adding anything), but keeping someone in a contrib position because they happen to write quality reviews that happen to be hip hop doesn't make sense. no offence to Guzzo (good writer), but consistency matters. they want someone who can bring the goods regularly, not pop in to review one of the biggest releases of the year and then disappear for months.

it definitely makes sense to cater a bit towards writers of niche genres who can bring something new to the table, though, and anyone who could review hip hop well and review it often would be successful here.

Talking to me lambs? Since it came out, I listened to it front to back 5 times before I started writing. I think I've listened to it about 2 more times since I wrote this piece. I didn't want to write this based off of one listen so I let it sit for awhile and kept listening. Why do you ask?

In regards to what Johnny just said, I agree with my demotion. I don't have the time to review as much as I would like. I'm double majoring in PolySci/Journalism, I play baseball for my college and I work on the weekends. I wrote this on my phone during my political science class today. That's literally the best time I had to even write something I really wanted to put my thoughts into.

I mean, I guess its because there was a time period between October until today where I didn't review anything. Again, its because I haven't had much time to write down any reviews since college started up. I don't think it was because of my writing skills, but I've been wrong before lol.

Appreciate the kind words though Calc! Thanks brother

The lyrics on the album are fucking excellent, the beats are creative, and Kendrick's delivery is top notch. Cannot ask for anything else from a hip-hop record.
