Judge an album by its cover it’s alright this time around

First half of the new one is pretty meh, hopefully the rest will pop out a little more for me.

Nah. I mean it's fine but it's pretty clear Isaac's heart really isn't in it anymore and he's trapped in his own life.

the "figure it out" part in the opener is fantastic and the rest of it is just dead air

new album has gotten more and more excruciating the further I've descended into it

I like that in its own way ‘Leave a Light On’ is worse than Pistol from Strangers

Where’s my ‘Lampshades on Fire’? Where’s my ‘The Ground Walks’? The new one doesn’t have as many stillborns as Strangers but also…hardly anything that good at all :/
First listen: I hope the rest of the album is all better than the gimmicky opener
Second listen: I wish the rest of the album kept the momentum from the opener

yea patchy as this is it has a handful of really strong high points. ground walks is easily my favorite track of theirs post wwd and a comfortable top 5er good news onward, and the title track, wicked campaign and coyotes are really strong too. thought the closer of the new one was solid and wooden soldiers was cool but that's it, and even then they'd be like, middle of the pack here

Yeah the new one feels like an album where I’d rate every song 2.5-3 except two 3.5 tunes and the aforementioned ‘Leave a Light On’ which is a 0.5
Wooden Soldiers is a 2.5 at best until the last three minutes when it gets more interesting

Lol the opener is the best song official for me…and I disliked that tune quite intensely on the first listen
The last song with the Z Grade Placebo riff I’m not digging too much but maybe the second best…or the last three minutes of Wooden Soldiers? Yeah, just a poor album

Yeah, there's nothing I feel like keeping from the new one. I'm done with it already (but not done complaining obv).

yea the songs i think are alright aren't really "keepers" as much as "better than their surroundings". im not coming back to it again

Ghandi@ meant their new one, I should have said that I guess
No nuggets in the golden casket eh ehh

I think what really sinks golden casket, as well as this one to a lesser extent, is that Isaac's lyrics are just borderline incoherent a lot of the time. He's not writing piercing observations about rural America like on Long Drive or TLCW and he's not really introspecting or philosophizing like on M&A/Good News/the good tracks on WWD, it's just weird disconnected ramblings that aren't especially interesting
Like obv the songs being hookless and badly produced doesn't help but the lyricism was always the main draw of this band for me and it's just not there anymore

"Like obv the songs being hookless and badly produced doesn't help but the lyricism was always the main draw of this band for me and it's just not there anymore"
100%, as a defender of Good News/WWD the draw there was always better-than-average-indie lyrics with top tier hooks, and Golden Casket is either coked-up nonsense or Hallmark-level banality (with Lace Your Shoes as the exception that proves the rule, since it seems genuinely heartfelt)

Not a huge fan of this one as a whole, but people saying the new one is better are nuts. This one's at least got some tunes.
