idk, i take Neurosis and Ulcerate completely seriously for example. Autopsy and Immortal are examples of bands i see as more "fun" or whatever. not that i dont take the music seriously as an art form at all, but it is really ridiculous and over the top and cheesy, which is part of the charm.

Most people who listen to extreme music are far from extreme people, I remember when everyone got all butthurt when gaahl said he hopes for more church burnings in the future, all the conservative little hippy metalheads got butthurt when they realized that a metal musician isnt necessarily a peace keeping hippy like they all hoped for. Metalheads are becoming more PC as time goes on, getting offended over lord mantises deathmask album cover as well... lol.
