Feels like a troll almost. He's never done something quite like it where he just overlaps a bunch of drum beats and throws in a few notes. Garbage. And I generally love Aphex Twin.

My mom took classes from the guy who built some of these instruments (Godfried-Willem Raes) when she was
studying music. He's a total nutter, but also kinda brilliant. He was one of the first academics in the
conservatory who actively investigated non-western composition and also the first to start messing with
computers and electronics. He even built his own concert hall in the form of a tetrahedron for optimal
acoustics.

I think there's still a video around of him demonstrating his motion-controlled orchestra: according to
him, the sensors only work when there are no clothes obscuring your motions.

"mixed results" =/= 4.0 imo but great review anyway

Yeah, you're probably right. 3.9 is a bit strong of a rating for the way I worded that. I should have said mostly favorable or something. I'll make note of that in the future. Thanks.

Unfortunately, looking at the trend here and around other sites it would appear that my rating is probably on the strong side. The

Guardian, for whatever that's worth, ripped the EP to pieces (even somehow managing to pull the race card on Richard. lol.) and NME

has given it a lukewarm review. The one thing I have noticed, however, is that more listeners than I would have expected seem to be

reviewing it in the context of an album instead of as an EP.

I dunno what people's issues with it are really. I think it's pretty interesting and a lot of fun to listen to!

A couple of my RYM 'friends' seem to like it a lot. I'm fairly confident I'll find it somewhat enjoyable at the very least.

Let's be honest here, it's the Guardian. If you're looking for someone who can argue ANYTHING, they're your guys.

"The hip-hop feel continues with the more beat-driven tracks, but they’re very tame indeed. As with Zomby, SBTRKT and others, it’s

weird that white artists will put out handsomely packaged (and priced) LPs of what are essentially rap instrumentals, while hip-hop

producers embedded in the culture would never dream of it"

Dude who wrote it looks really fucking white btw. Though I guess Richard must now be judged alongside the likes of DJ Premier,

Madlib, Dr. Dre, Black Milk, Dilla, Doom, etc. You know, his obvious peers in the culture he and his band of robots are

apparently, and inextricably, embedded in.

I really like this EP. Possibly even better at 45RPM. A dose of adrenaline gives the already slightly unsettling atmosphere an interesting twist.

found someone playing it at 45 on youtube, I think i like it better at 45. it definitely sounds a lot more similar to his drill'n'bass/experimental jungle type stuff
