i mean it can be a carefuly crafted emotional piece of music, why do they have to be mutually exclusive anyway? it doesn't need to be spontaneous to be emotional. also, are you implying pop songs can't be emotional?

oh they can be, but I think it's less common in pop music than, say, avant-jazz or any other kind of music that truly respects the freedom of expression.

Pop music is almost by definition meant to please the listener, not the artist. And so to please the listener the artist may have to compromise their vision in order to make the compositions more appealing, therefore losing some of the original essence of the piece. I'm not saying it's a rule that always applies, just a tendency. Sometimes what the artist wants to say lines up exactly with what the average consumer wants to hear, but I'd argue that it's not that common.

Ironically I'd say a lot more recent pop music these days is almost being emotional for emotional's sake, in an attempt to draw listeners in on 'oh this song is so sad I love it'. Have you heard some of the popular stuff these days? It's fucking depressing is what it is. I remember when ANYTHING sad was an instant "fuck this, this is so emo". Funny how polar opposite it seems to have gone.
