i think visual kei as a whole has been tainted by the low quality of bands that jumped on the scene for an easy buck. Visual Kei in the 90s was a counter culturist music movement in Japan that went against conventions, hence the androgyny and outrageous outfits and stuff. But more than that, there was an almost punk attitude to it, and the scene cultivated a lot of creativity. Thats why bands like Dir en Grey wrote about taboo subjects, it was for the shock value and made a rebellious statement/ critique against a fairly conservative country. Visual kei is now associated more with the visuals and shitty song writing than the creativity which it once represented, which makes me sad because many people are turned away from the good bands because of what the scene became: a bunch of anime cosplayers trying their best to be X, Luna Sea or Dir en Grey
