Good review. I didn't like this album at first, but it grew on me. I listen to it all the time now.
I heard needled 24/7 on he mtv2 headbangers ball cd and i loved every second of it
**** straight. Even though the band hated the music video and now the director, it's still one of their best songs.

| |
Meh, Needled 24/7 is highly overrated. That dumb 'techno' break is so bad.

I'm fine with the album, no complaints here....there are things I like about it over other COB albums, and things I like about the others over it.
I've got to say, though...I still hold to the contention that they're a melodic death band with power influences. Maybe Power death? But just straight "power metal" doesn't do the band justice, IMO (not to say I don't like power by any means). Songs like "6 Pounder" are alot more death than power. Sure, you could make the case that their earlier material was power metal with screaming death vocals, but...that's still a stretch IMO.

Six Pounder may not be power metal, but it's not really death as well. Granted, I haven't listened to that song in a long time, and probably never will. However, teh heaviness seems to come from teh lame chuga chuga riffs in a lot of modern rock/metal, which is different from teh riffage in death metal.

Det Notsip has the closest genre I think but They're really hard to classify under just one. Power melodic death with maybe a taste of prog is where I would place them.

'Techno' break? What part are you talking about?

Hate Crew Deathroll is a good song, you might say it has punk elements in it and that makes it ****ty but its the 3rd best song on the cd imo.

Well, not techno, but crap, that dumb part with the drum machine, teh verse I assume?

Contrary to popular belief, a genre is not determined solely by the guitarplaying involved. ;)
I can see why guitarists would think that they're PM based on alot of the guitarplaying, but the over-all picture has consistently blended melodic death with power metal. I mean, really...where do you draw the line? COB would probably represent the far melodic end of melodic death, but I still think that they deserve to be associated with the genre. Send COB in with a big power fest, and alot of people will be unhappy...send 'em in with In Flames or Arch Enemy, and they'll fit right at home. I know that this isn't always the best way of judging the matter, but it DOES say something about the band's approach. Harsh vocals are one of the, if not THE most important aspect of death metal, as they tend to be the most likely to deter potential audiences.
I would be interested to see if someone could meet this challenge by presenting a death metal band with ABSOLUTELY NO HARSH VOCALS, only melodic singing...my guess would be that it simply wouldn't work.

Teh harsh vocals, though important, aren't teh most important aspects of death metal. There are other genre's that feature harsh vocals, but that doesn't make it death metal. And to be honest, a lot of people would probably appreciate CoB at a power metal festival. A good amount of people, who consider them power/speed like them because they have good decent riff work. And in metal, teh dominating factor is teh riffage. That's what metal is basically built on, somewhat. guitarplaying, but the over-all picture has consistently blended melodic death
Even teh popular Gothenburg bands like In Flames aren't or weren't 'melodic' death metal. They're (older) riffage, as well as other Gothenburg bands, were primarily Iron Maiden influenced, with the whole melody and traditional structures, etc.,
I forgot what I was going to say about teh last thing you said, so if it comes back to me, I'll edit this post. :D
I really don't want to continue this 'arguement' since it's really going to go nowhere. ;)

Are you intentionally writing 'teh' instead of 'the'? It's really starting to get on my nerves.

Every CoB album is amazing. I find myself loving HCDR more and more. I'm actually listening to it right now. By no means is it musically the best song but I've really taken a liking to "your better off dead". Bodom Beach Terror is amazing, gets me fired up as fuck

I agree with your statement about Bodom Beach Terror. It's the best song on the album if you ask me.
Lil Bloodred Ridin' Hood is a good song too.

If this is the only Bodom album you have heard so far, you're in for a treat. This is their weakest release to date, but it's still great.
