That'd be sick! Do you write any of your own music, Acme?

And I dunno, this is my fav of the 3, closely followed by Uroboros. Honestly switches between the two on a weekly basis.

If someone pulled a gun to my head and said choose I'd say this is the weakest of the 3 I guess but I don't really care to differentiate. Plus I think Gauze is almost as good as the 3 in question, plus there's The Unraveling to consider with the Macabre remake.

This might be my favorite, but it's essentially the same situation. They all feel unsurpassable

xiLeadFeather: At the moment, I haven't written my own music yet. Still trying to learn my way 'round the bass but I'd like to get to that point of writting my own someday. I've made a few weird field recording/sampled sourced noise and drone pieces every once in awhile for fun if that counts, lol.

Uroboros is probably my go to answer for favorite DEG album but like Calc, I think Gauze is almost as good as Uroboros, DSS, this, and (for me at least) Withering. And then there's albums like Kisou and Marrow which have grown on me a lot thanks to watching/listening to those songs on live releases.

Basically there's the trio formed by the last three albums, followed by Gauze, then quite a gap to the others that for now is only filled by the Sukekiyo records; I wonder how well the next will do in my ranking (Utafumi isn't enough to decide just yet and I'm craving for the release of the new song they've already played live).

I agree with you guys that Gauze is the next best after these 3 for sure. Not gonna lie, I'm not the biggest fan of the rest of their discog but there's some cool stuff in Withering/Marrow/Unraveling. They just don't hold a candle to these 3 (all 4.6-8ish) and Gauze (4.3ish).

@Acme I totally get you on that. Keep me posted if you do get around to writing your own music/posting it though! Would love to hear it. I have a feeling that there are some dope musicians around the site that just don't get enough attention since this site seems pretty clique-y.

The last three are all 10/10 (the only band to accomplish this for me). Gauze is like 8/10 for me

Gauze is a very high 4.5 for me, but anything that I place after it would be around 4 tops, with the Sukekiyo LP and EP at values between them.

Main problem with the albums Macabre to Marrow is the production and plenty of songs being too simple really, so naturally it will work better live. On lives it's a completely different story, songs being on the level or better than stuff on the 'power' 3.

@Lead: Why don't you like Unraveling much? :/

Gauze feels really underdeveloped in some places and is super awesome in others. It's pretty uneven imo

I think it's a classic. Such a weird case where it's timeless but dated as well, really does feel like a 90's Visual Kei album through and through. All the 'underdeveloped factors' just help it even more and gives it so much personality. Songs like Tsumi and the original Zan aren't gonna hold up to the gigantic denseness of 2008 onwards in terms of heaviness but that's not the point to why they're so good. Plus the stunning ear worms like Yokan and Cage has so much substance to them along with being very catchy singles and the mini epics on the album are mindblowing with their sense of atmosphere and songwriting.

The 'mini epics' are definitely the highlights. It's a beautiful album in the best places, really amazing. I really can't get into Mask and Schwein though, but I agree that being uneven is part of its charme. It is a brilliant album, but miles away from the last ones still imo

Edit: Like, the best on Gauze is perfectly normal level for the last three

Well, you did pick the weakest tracks on Gauze. They're a big part of why I can't 5 it.

Well, the one track off Gauze that I'm indifferent towards is Mask. However, Schwein No Isu gets my adrenaline pumping. The rest I think are good to amazing. I think I have at a 4 right now and I can't imagine bumping it to a 5 (yet) but bumping it to a 4.5 seems more likely cause of Mask being the one miss.

Yeah Mask is easily the worst track on the album but I wouldn't call it a bad track. Schwein is an awesome opener but to compare to what is to come it's probably the 2nd worst track on the album. I just love mazohyst of decadence and 304 too much.

I don't remember anything sticking out to me when I listened to Unraveling! I'm going to go back over it and see if my mind has changed (since my opinion on DSS changed as I gave it time to sink in). Marrow and Withering are fairly inconsistent to me (some great tracks others are meh) and then Kisou/Vulgar/Six Ugly/Kasumi just aren't for me (not super into the Nu Metal sounding stuff).

While Six Ugly is pretty one-note, there are some beautiful tracks on Kisou and Vulgar that have nothing to do with nu metal.

"Cool album but def the weakest out of the 'power 3' records."

Have to fully agree with this.
