I thought Ashes was average with some exceptional songs, The Blackening was okay and Unto the Locust was great - how much am I likely to enjoy this?

I see this as an amalgamation of Through the Ashes and UTL but with less interesting riffs and more filler.

I'll get straight to the point in saying that I prefer "Unto the Locust" to this album. Main reason being, some songs on this album seem to try way too hard in trying to stay relevant and "true" to MH's original core style, whereas "Unto the Locust" in my opinion was a lot more diverse and experimental-and that's basically how I like my Machine Head.

Nonetheless, "Bloodstones & Diamonds" is still a really solid, above average album, and especially considering I wasn't too fond of 'Now we Die' and 'Night of the long Knives' (still not actually). I think these sort of songs showed Machine Head at their most aggressive, but not necessarily best-again, it made me think they were trying too hard. That said, my personal highlights are definitely 'Sail into the Black', 'Beneath the Silt' and 'Damage Inside', as for me they were each hardcore evidence of how MH can write a brilliant song.

Or you could check out The More Things Change... and cut all the bullshit and listen to Machine Head at their peak?

'The More Things Change' was the first sign of trouble to come.

I disagree, I think this album is more experimental than UTL (experimental for MH's standards anyway). Damage Inside is the biggest departure from their usual style they've done, and Now We Die features that build up that they haven't done in any of their songs before. But you are definitely right in some respects, there are quite a few songs where they play it too safe

What the fuck, are you sure you have the right album? They perfected their groove/ hardcore sound, never hints at nu metal in the slightest if that's what you're implying.

UTL is basically them staying in their comfort zone though. It's so boring after a few listens.

people complaining about UtL being too different from The Blackening and too experimental compared to it and then people complaining that it's too campy...

sigh...

B&D is the first MH album that I can say I love since TTAOE.

I don't see UTL as a big departure from TB, more like an obvious and natural progression without a lot of risk taking, MH playing it fairly safe and the album seems to lack the soul of their other records.'who we are' is just awful, a very poor finish to the album, that song wouldn't have made it onto any of their previous discs. I suppose it's not always easy to follow up a hugely successful (if slightly overrated) album and perhaps relationships in team MH relating to the departed Duce were already affecting them in the studio. B&D despite not being to everyone's tastes sees MH avoid getting stuck in a rut and instead taking some chances, challenging themselves and the listener, which I find impressive some 20 years after their debut album.
