This review is hilariously bad. Sounds like the rantings and Ravings of a FORMER metalhead who doesn't do well with change.

That being said, fuck this album. AtG should have just stayed "retired."

Totally disagree with review. I went into this album not expecting a thing, but hoping for the band to at least pick up where they left off. They delivered. It's an homage to the genre they helped create. I've been listening to extreme metal and metal in general for over twenty years. I remember vividly purchasing Slaughter of the Soul when it came out and not being able to stop listening to it for weeks. It was truly groundbreaking. This brings back those feelings, though it's far from groundbreaking anymore. This style has been morphed and regurgitated so much anymore that it's no wonder people find this album lackluster. They've heard it all before, especially the younger generations. But us who were there in the early and mid 90s when extreme metal was so fresh and exciting remember.

This is an album of a much more focused and mature band. Sure, a lot of the original ferocity is gone, and that's understandable given the age of the members.

Just take it for what it is: A very enjoyable and listenable melodeath album.

Yeah. I like Melodic Death Metal and even though the hype has died, I don't think the scene/genre has. Also, this really isn't that bad once the xx-year buildup has been removed and the album is just listened to on its own. It sounds like a natural progression of where the band would have went after Slaughter of the Soul. People define AtG by that album, but forget that they have three varied albums that came before that. This release keeps their entire discography in mind.

it's nowhere near as aggressive as it should be, but it's still OK. Better than anything In Flames have done since like Clayman, so at least there's that.

I think "At War With Meh" would have also been an acceptable summary.

Yeah right, melodic death metal is dead. Gene Simmons much? Soilwork is still alive and killing it bruh. Listen to The Living Infinite.

This is a solid and enjoyable comeback album. I'm sure this album was made simply because a bunch of guys genuinely enjoy playing and creating music together and not to top previous efforts or to satisfy purist, elitist, over-judgmental annoying and so-called metal fans. I love metal, but the whiny comments about this album so far are exactly why I dislike so many other metal fans. It's like women on their periods. I fully support and hope that At the Gates continue to make more albums after this!

I thought MDM was actually doing well nowadays. The past two years have had some great MDM albums. Albeit a bit stale and lacking aggression, this is still an enjoyable listen for me.

Melodeth really isn't dead. Besides In Flames bowing out, there are a lot of awesome bands in the genre still kicking ass
