Yes and no - there's a lot of moments that branch out to other topics but the basis of her music is still relationships, regret, etc.

Also "Shake It Off" is the worst #1 hit in the last few years

Yeah I absolutely despised it for the longest time - but it grew on me to the point of being listenable. And now that I get that the whole thing was meant to be ironic, I respect it a little more than when I thought it was a serious attempt at songwriting.

Thanks Sowing, I know to pass on this. Don't worry you're still my favorite reviewer on the site, but I have a feeling I'll agree with your "Red" review much more than this.

Saw her on play Out of the Woods on Kimmel, and I really liked the verses, but the chorus was kind of lame.
Haven't given it a relisten though, so I don't think I can give a fair judgement on it. The music on Shake
It Off is top notch, but to be honest, I'm really tired of "haters gonna hate" type lyrics (not necessarily
from her, just in general.) But again, I don't think it's a bad song. Looking forward to checking out the
album soon.

I guess, but for me ironic songwriting is only enjoyable if I actually like the song itself, and that thing's already been overplayed to death anyway.

That's nice of you to say! If you liked "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together", "I Knew You Were Trouble", and "22", I'd encourage you to check this out as they fit the pop mold of 1989 perfectly. But if you still prefer her country-ish approach (if you ever even did), then you won't find anything to like here.

That was my exact reason for hating this when it was released, but again, the irony makes it
acceptable. And if you enjoyed the musical aspect of the song, then I feel like you'll be in for a treat
with the rest of 1989.

I agree it's been beaten to death by the radio - but to be honest I'm glad it's that song because it kind
of lends itself to silliness and popular trends anyway.

I never really liked any of her stuff tbh... I was in middle school when she first blew up so as
you can imagine as a kid who mostly listened to hard rock/metal at the time Taylor Swift songs
were like the worst thing ever lol. And then when I got older and more into other genres and
Red came out it wasn't really the type of pop music I was into.

See it was the exact opposite for me. I was just getting into alt/indie and pop when she exploded, and I'm always a sucker for pretty girls singing pretty melodies.

Obviously not every song will be as catchy as those, but the style of this album follows in the footsteps of those tracks.

Yeah I get you, I usually am too... I might give this a shot at some point, but I'll probably wait til it's on Spotify which might take a while. Great review though of course... I re-read your review of Red just now and thought it was spot on, if this is really THAT much better I'll be impressed.

My little sister said I had to listen to the whole thing to give it a fair rating. Honestly the whole thing reminds me of Lana, and tbh I find Lana to be an awful lyricist and only mediocre vocalist. Something about this just irks me the wrong way, even if some songs on it are actually good (wildest dreams).
However, your review is awesome as always sowing. It actually convinced me to bump my rating up a bit higher

Yeah if you usually don't like her stuff definitely don't buy it - I mean, unless you end up enjoying this more.
And as far as that Red review goes, I still stand by my main points, but it grew on me quite a bit. I kind of loosened up and forgave the blatant things that sucked about it, to the point that I'd rate it in the 3-range now. So this is a 4.3 compared to a 3.3 more than it is a 4.3 compared to a 2.

Ah I see... I don't think I'll ever understand why so many people I know love her, but like I was saying I think I just didn't connect with her music at the right time for me to care.

Yeah there are some undeniable Lana influences, although the track you mentioned as being one of her best (Wildest Dreams) is actually the song that portrays that vibe the strongest. Thanks for the compliment, it's always nice to know that users still read reviews instead of looking at the rating, who wrote it, and then going straight to the comments. =)
