Does the opening of "Unleash" not remind you of "Ye Entracemperium?" I was almost expecting to hear

"Draaaawn towards these lands agaaaaiiiin!" about 16 seconds in.

Well fuck me, I guess I'm the only one who hears it. But seriously. They're both three-and-one

quarter note tremolo patterns wavering between minor seconds that are joined by crash hits in the

second measure. Then a blast beat comes in behind the same repeated riff, after which a high scream

enters and is held for another two measures. It's the same thing.

I know that doesn't necessarily mean they sound the same. But to my ear, Anaal seems to have drawn

from that as a a blueprint for their sound. You know what...just never mind. I'm just digging

myself a deeper hole with every sentence.

I mean if you imagine grindy converge esque hardcore with Emperor like black metal smashed together, that really isn't far from this. The clean vocals sound like Howard Jones in that they're kind bassy and full but not terribly close.

For me this is Anaal Nathrakh staying firmly in their comfort zone, and the album itself comes across very simplistic and straightforward. Not that there's anything wrong with that, or indeed that previous albums don't have a similar effect, but I think from listening to this that the band have sort of taken a step back, and for that reason I'm not quite as impressed as I was with "Vanitas". That said, there's still a lot of songs to like here if you're a fan of the band. For me the best ones are "Unleash", the title track and "The Joystream". Also, the industrial effects mostly give a slightly unnerving listen, especially when cutting straight through the metal parts.
