Wow, this is a very beautiful album. Darkness is lovely as well as Emergent, Resolve and Harmonia. I have to check out their earlier stuff too.

wish this was a longer album, but that also gives you a reason to give it another spin.

Even though Solace is a masterpiece, I feel this album evolves the sound they had from that album.

They pay so much attention to detail which i love about them. Not to mention, those drums are so

precise and complex during each buildup! Just incredible

Good news: they're gonna start writing a new album within the next year.

I do think Jakob are very good and everything. Their dark atmosphere on Solace is great and I really like Malachite. But I don't see what makes them be regarded as being something special. This album is delay-laden guitar-based crescendoes. They're just another post-rock band. They're not particularly unique or powerful. I don't really get the hype. It is enjoyable stuff though.

Still have yet to jam this, but Solace was far from crescendocore. Sure their were build ups. They were very subtle, and took a while to develop and unravel (and not always to a crescendo) which is what made that album special

yeah i mean i wouldn't call it crescendo-core. but there are crescendoes here. i just don't see what's different about this band that makes everyone almost unanimously agree they are something special. they have hardly any critics. it's not like most really good post-rock albums where you have some people who aren't too keen and some people who are casual fans. i feel like i'm totally alone here in not thinking they are mindblowing.

the tones, the brilliant drums, the fluidity, the unique melodic style, the reserved and subtle songwriting

the thing with jakob for me is that it took a long time (and i don't doubt this album will too) and i'm not trying to sound condescending, don't get me wrong. there's not really anything to 'get'. solace is amazing because it's the perfect blank canvas to make your own meaning out of and i think that's what is so brilliant about them. it's a story without narrative, you make your own.

That all makes sense to me and I agree. There's a lot of music that really works for me because of it's fluidity and subtlety. But that's what's weird though... usually those bands whose music connects with people through subtleties and less obvious qualities things like fluidity etc. don't get the overwhelming praise that Jakob seem to get. Usually some people "get it" and some don't. But with Jakob, seemingly everyone is tuned in to it. With most bands who get this many 5s attributed to them, it's obvious what it is that makes them great. But with Jakob it seems a little more intangible to me. I don't claim they're not great by any means, I'm just surprised there aren't more people who, like me, happen to not connect so profoundly with the band's music.

Oh man. Just listen to Emergent one more time. You'll feel it, I promise.

i think the fact they're a bit under-appreciated in terms of numbers doesn't help because it instinctively makes people far more passionate about loving them. otherwise jakob has just as many naysayers as say mono, explosions etc.

recognizing the great instrumentation of jakob is for nothing if you don't get into it emotionally and that's something that took a long time to happen with 'solace' but it eventually did and as such is my favorite record of all time. but that's where i'm at with this record right now, realizing how good the writing is but not being 'into' it. time will tell, hopefully.

I do really like the instrumentation of Jakob. In fact I have spent a bit of time trying to replicate their sound on guitar (mainly using Malachite as inspiration). I recorded a really cool verse/chorus loop that sounded a bit like Jakob mixed in with some Nordic Giants. I would have shared it with you when we were discussing our music in that other thread but i accidentally deleted the recording. I've tried to recreate it but I can't remember most of it :/

For me it's mostly the atmosphere, the attention to detail, the extremly layered sound and above all the sublime drumming. (I'm also a sucker for delay-laden guitar parts) I disagree on Jakob being crescendoe orientated. Obviously they use some crescendoes, but I think compared to most post-rock bands their songs do not rely on a pounding crescendoe. Listen to "darkness", "Sines" or "Emergent"... sure they build somewhat, but I think they are far and away from bands like "Explosions in the Sky" for example.

Honestly, this is the most polite, civil, and constructive discussion on differences in musical opinion that I've ever seen on this site.
