I'm reading the books right now, only reason I know of em was due to this album

I'm on The Bonehunters. Midnight Tides was awesome.

i kinda wanna reread the books but even though they're amazing in a lot of ways they're also ridiculously tedious lol, i mean it's gotta be close to 10,000 pages in the main series

still great tho

yeah 10k pages and ~3.2 million words. and given Erikson's writing you really have to pay attention to all of it.

I never really minded the length except during a few plotlines later in the series like the Snake, but yeah it's a long commitment. everyone I know who has re-read the series says it's even better on re-read. I'll definitely get around to doing it but I'm working through the other novels in the series first.

Honestly light years better than any Summoning album not named Stronghold, and even then, it's very close.

The main argument I always hear against Caladan Brood is that they're a Summoning clone band, which I've never understood that knock. Summoning has such a unique and great sound, why would you be opposed to bands trying to emulate that sound? It's like:

"Summoning is the ONLY band that's allowed to sound like that! They created this sound, so NO OTHER BAND should sound like Summoning!"

If this were the case, then Metal would have never evolved past Black Sabbath..

And before the inevitable "they don't bring anything new to the table, they literally copy the exact formula"

They really do. Caladan Brood has quite a bit more guitar/riffs in their music, and don't entirely rely on pure synths to create that atmosphere, although they're obviously still a huge part of it.

Caladan just writes more interesting songs, I think. Also, the chorus vocals are gorgeous -- particularly that refrain that ends the album.

Summoning recreates a different fantasy atmosphere than Caladan Brood, aptly so because theyre based off different book series.

Nah summoning is slightly better (personally). it's one of the cases where the pioneer is superior (so far) . Riff dominance doesn't make this better. Old Mornings Dawn destroys all fantasy metal.
