Man this album is a real chore to sit through. Smh, I always end up at free jazz albums when all I'm looking for is superb compositions and arrangements. Where the hell do I look for that?

Anthony Davis and Charles Mingus. If you want more "composed" free-jazz

I was about to suggest Mingus too as a means of bridging the arranged/free gap

Thx fam. I've always loved the afterglow of this album but really does feel like a ritual, and in that regard I'm always intimidated to initially dive into it. Anyway, at this point I haven't explored much jazz beyond Coltrane and Davis. Furthermore I generally find jamming to Davis' music to be a bit of a slog usually, so I'm looking for more easy going stuff to just throw on in casual situations.

There is no free jazz anywhere in Mingus' music but his music does get very busy at times

If you want more "composed" check out Anthony Braxton's live recordings (I suggest the 1978 Köln Creative Orchestra album), if you want something that's way more free but isn't as static as this and has much more energy and noise you should listen to Brötzmann's Machine Gun

@six - it functions but I’m p self conscious of my older reviews - less so when it’s a genre I have a critical handle on. I ❤️my share of jazz but I’m not well-equipped to review it
