Art of Malice>>>> [2]
I actually retract this statement. I listened to Devil Knows My Name again last night, and found I enjoyed it way more than on my first experience, and would probably say that both albums are on par with one another. Devil doesn't have the variety and zaniness of Malice, but the compositions themselves are epic as fuck, and succeed in keeping up an entertaining pace for 8 minutes without feeling much of any fatigue.

I wonder what MM would sound like if he was still in the band. Better, I'm going to assume. But he's great with Rob Zombie so there would be no need to go back.

Oh and all my pos, great review.

It wouldn't be much different at all. I once listened to Holy Wood for the sake of hearing Johh 5 complimented with vocals, but you can barely tell he's there because of all the industrial distortion and the five hundred layers of vocal overdubbing.

Yeah I suppose it wouldn't make any difference. He shines more with RZ.

Have yet to listen to a Zombie record in general. Only really familiar with the 90s/00s singles.

Heard some of the newer stuff but pretty much on the same boat as you.

I'm a big John 5 fan and I think it's interesting you mention Buckethead in the review. I'd say their biggest shared quality isn't the tapping though, but rather the chickin pickin.
I find John 5 to be more technically perfect than Buckethead, not better, just more meticulous in his playing. Buckethead, however, is far more emotional in his playing than John 5, which is unfortunate because that's the main reason I can't leave a John 5 album in my player for weeks on end.
Good review.

I literally have no idea how to critique guitar-playing btw. I'll hear a riff and either be like "oh that sounds nice" or "oh well thats a bit boring".
"Chickin pickin" sounds like a fun word to bring up in conversation though
Hey bro what you up to?
Oh not much bro, just chicken pickin
Cool

From what I read, John 5 didn't have all that much input on Holy Wood, he just came into it as it was just being finished. He did about 80% of the songs on the Golden Age though and i think that is Manson's most heavy album in terms of music. So I actually think Manson's sound would have gone the other way if John was still in it. Still, what will be, will be.

Interesting.
In that case, I'll think twice about not divulging in more of MM's discog.

Oh, Manson's whole discog is definintely worth hearing. Quite a wide array of styles as his career has gone on, some weaker than others. However, I think John's time spent with Manson was best for me.

Nah, Noche Acosador from the last album is one of the standouts.
Guy should go all out Buckethead one of these days and whip out a banjo mid-album
