^^Yeah, they're pretty good live. I may see them at Lollapalooza.
The real reason behind this post is so this can be my third review to pass 1000 views without me refreshing the page 5 times. This Message Edited On 07.16.06

I am a hugee Dolls fan and I think this is a fantastic album I love Amanda's songwriting, the dark wit of her lyrics and her raw voice. There are some amazing songs on this album and i would have probably rated it higher had i not heard thier work before this. I agree with the general concensus here that the self titled was thier masterpeice and while yes virginia doesn't quite rival that its awesome nontheless.
If youre really a fan though, you neeed to see them live. Thier performances are incredible and the shows themselves are like an experience. ive seen them more than once around the Boston area. live statues, sword swallowers, accordian players in the bathrooms, you never know what you'll see at a dolls show

sing is the worst song they've ever done...

Given this a few spins. Agree with the talk on 'Sing' having crap lyrics, and being largely crap in general. Going to hunt down the s/t now.

Sing is amazing, I don't get the hate.

I think "Sing" is one of the worst songs they've ever done. It's too anthemic, and the lyrics are awfully corny. The last part with all the "OHHHH"s is reeeeally nice, and their harmonies are so good. But everything before that I just find unbearably cheesy.
I think "First Orgasm" is the emotional highlight. It's such a sad song, about someone who is so unbearably lonely, living solely in desperation.
FAV TRACKS: Sex Changes, Delilah, First Orgasm, Mandy

No, Virginia is far superior.
| | | I like Sing, reminds me of Neutral Milk Hotel, sex changes is a good song too
| | | "I don't find the piano or the drumming to be that efficent. I find them sort of bland and dull, and I don't beleive that they are both "great" ... I think they're trying to be different just to be different"
...different just to be different? As opposed to different just to be the same? If what you're getting at is that their theatrical, over-the-top style grates on you...that's an argument, at least.
Also, the drumming is great. All the little flourishes and punctuations Viglione tosses in to play off the piano and vocals - because he's fully one-half of the band, he's just as much of a melodic force as Palmer, in addition to providing the rhythm.

I'm not a huge fan of the Dolls but they do make some great music, particularly the beginning and end of the album (Sex Changes, Backstabber, Shores of California, Necessary Evil, Sing). It's really love it or hate it, since you either buy into their strange punk cabaret deal or write it off as a silly attention ploy.
