I'm still undecided on whether I like this more or less than ADTOE.



On the one hand, I like the longer, more progressive songs ADTOE has to offer, but I think this album does a bit better at what it sets out to achieve (i.e more accessible, shorter), whereas ADTOE does sound a tiny bit uninspired in places

Octavarium has some excellent songs (t/t, sacrificed sons), but also some of their weaker songs, I think, such as I walk beside you, never enough, the answer lies within. Black clouds is solid throughout, but it's plagued by weak lyrics and the terrible Portnoy backing vocals - "POWER!!...DIGNITY!!!", "EVERYONE SURVIVED, ROOOOAAAAAAR!!!!" Count is one of their best recent songs though and the solo for the best of times is outstanding.



I will admit I know I'm in the minority with this opinion, although black clouds gets a lot more praise on here than most other sites.

Nah, it's nice to have some contrasting opinions. 7/8 reviews for Black Clouds are at a 4 which says a lot really. I agree with you on your points (except the one about The Answer Lies Within. It's got that cheesy "shiiiine" moment, but it's a pretty relaxing song) but it's more the fact that I find this atrociously bad. Besides The Enemy Inside and Behind The Veil, everything is so damn cheesy. Every song tries to have that epic, uplifting chorus, like The Bigger Picture, and just ends up sounding so cheesy in the process along with some horrendous lyrics. Simply put, there weren't enough solid ideas on this to even begin with to top those albums IMO
