Never got the impression that Chino was bored by sex in his songwriting. Hedonistic, maybe, but more often than not I feel like the sexual themes in their music revolve around voyeurism, and vulnerability

every day I wake up and thank god that I don’t know or have any ability to discuss the sexual themes of Chino’s songwriting. this creates a beautiful symbiotic relationship between me and the Deftones fanbase who surely echo the same sentiment, though perhaps unknowingly. I promise that if I do somehow ascertain the sexual themes of Chino’s songwriting I won’t speak a word about it

Actually the themes revolve around finding new ways to kill women and the eroticism arising from that act. Don't believe me? Just listen to Digital Bath, Beware and Hearts/Wires.

you're quite right valkoor, but i made a comment about sex, not sexual violence. the two are distinct but i suppose i could understand one drawing a thread between the two in terms of songwriting themes

Digital Bath is clear, but can you explain Beware and Hearts/Wires? Beware always seemed to be about drug addiction and Hearts/Wires is one of those post-Chi songs that sounds like it's about Chi.

Yeah Beware very clearly seems to be alcoholism. And Hearts / Wires could go either way imo, but I definitely think it’s more about Chi.

And goddamn the lyrics on Gore have aged bad if that song is about Sergio lol

I was only half-joking. I know Beware is about drugs, but if you didn't know what Chino associates water with you could easily misinterpret it as drowning a girl.

Hearts/Wires' chorus is about cutting a razor wire and dining on someone's heart so that he is yours forever, which is basically what you would if you were a serial killer (cannibal) stalking your victim outside of their house or smth. Stephen said he had problems embracing his "inner cannibalistic psycho" when writing for this song and it's why he didn't like it so I'd say it's probably something along these lines.

I think you’re taking it a little too literally imo.

“ The slit in the sky when you left is all I see

Nothing to sing about, I've bared all my leaves…”

Definitely seems to be about chi to me
