Sagas is an easy 5 for me.

Sagas is simply one of the best metal albums ever made and I'm not overstating myself even if it seems that I am. I rarely make these types of claims, no less from an album that came out in 2008. But it's truly legendary and there's just no way around it.

Was pretty bored with this tbqh. Sagas is much better though this is definitely an improvement over the snoozefest that was their last album.

Have you heard this yet?

Half of it yeah and it's mostly the same overproduced, overly orchestrated (for NB typical) mindless party music that the the pagan/viking/folk shtick has become known for.

It's like the metal equivalent of club music.

Menhir is a much more consistent band if we're speaking music of this type.

Haven't heard any Menhir but I'll definitely check them out. Tyr are another great band in the genre, and the new Eluveitie is amazing.

Eluveitie is hit and miss and gets monotonous quickly for me. Agreed on Týr.

Eluveitie do kinda stick to what they're good at most of the time but seriously, Origins is really really good.

Yeah, they've been ruined for me since I saw them live. Easily one of the worst live presences I've ever seen.

Wow really? I always thought they were pretty good live from what I'd seen on vids and stuff. Maybe they were just having a bad night, or I've been watching only the good vids.

Either way though, it's not too hard to believe they wouldn't be great live, nailing all those instrumental parts would be bloody difficult in a live setting I'd imagine.

Yeah, that was pretty much the issue. It was a hot mess and the mix was all over the place.

How are these guys normally live? Being sent off by my webzine higher ups (got picked up to work for Rocksins as a critic cos they liked my stuff on here) to their show at the Islington Academy so I can review their show cos Nuclear Blast wanted someone down there.

Hmm idk, something about this felt a little too cheesy with the folk elements. A little too Finntroll for me but not bad. May need another listen to grow on me.
